Any way to have direct steam be the default playback

Ok so i have found that with my particular setup .... files live on NAS - with emby running on proxmox container connected to nas ... and rokuTV device connected over 5ghz wifi

Files can often start and play with direct play but sometimes run into buffering/stuttering issues during prolonged playback or other high disk activity on the nas....

manually switching to directstream often fixes this issue (i assume this is because the emby server directly buffers the file on the server)

is there anyway to have direct stream be the default playback format for every file that is played?

Or is there somewhere else i should be looking to debug the direct play buffering issues?

Hi.  I think we need to look at a specific example because it doesn't make much sense that remuxing would improve playback if the issue is that the server is busy.

ok i will add that i have just tried switching to wired connection to my roku TV.  Which i have always thought would be worse since my TV, like all roku tvs, has a 100 ethernet port.  And i have a dedicated 5 ghz wifi accesspoint in the room and the TV reports a 300+ mbps conection when on wifi.

On the wired connection now when set to auto it limits the Mbps to 80 (which was actually the same as what it was doing for the wifi connection).   And so far things definately seem to be smoother.  So maybe my problem was really just flaky wifi the whole time.

Annoying that in 2026 tvs can't have a 1gbps port.  But it is what it is..  Would maybe be nice if we had more granular control of the mbps limit, (i have to jump from 80 to 110, my conection in roku shows i have 93mbps, and alot of my media is just over 80mbps so a setting of 85 would likely still be under the buffer). But maybe i am just asking for too much or thinking to hard about this.
