NVidia Shield playback spinning/fails to start

Hi

I have a problem with Emby for Android on an NVidia Shield Pro 2019.  Emby for Android is v3.5.36 but I have had this issue for at least a year or two so is not specific to this version.

When I start live TV or a recorded movie sometimes I just get a spinning circle permanently and playback never starts.  Restarting Emby also does not fix this, I have to reboot the entire Shield in order to get playback to work again.  Its intermittent so I can then start playback a few more times before it happens again.

This only ever happens at the start of playback.  Once it has started it will continue playing without fault.

I have tried disabling Direct Stream and also reduced the quality to 1080p but this makes no difference.  I've reset the Shield to factory defaults and installed Emby for Android again but its still the same.  The Shield is on the latest firmware (firmware upgrades over the past year or two have also made no difference)

I have several other android devices (a smart TV, tablet and phones) all running Emby for Android but none have this issue, so it is specific to the Shield.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and is there a fix?
Are there any diagnostics I can check that might help?

Many thanks,
Warren.

Hi there, please attach the Emby server log from when the problem occurred:

Thanks!

My first question is, is your Shield connected wirelessly?  If so then that may be a major contributor to the problem. A wireless connection may be reliable in most cases but it is also the most logical point of failure for many "unusual" problems and, if it is avoidable, should be eliminated if at all possible.

I found that my Shield had many little and unusual problems when it was connected wirelessly but almost all those disappeared when I connected an Ethernet cable to it. My shield has now become my most reliable client for Emby and most other apps. The only thing it cannot do that my Roku can is stream matches from NWSL+ and that is only because there is no NWSL app that is able to be installed on the Shield.

In most cases wired is better, much better, than wireless.

Of course if your Shield is already connected wired then disregard this post.

Hi Luke/Gilamesh

Thanks for the reply.  It is a gigabit ethernet connection.

Please find attached server logs as requested.  I have noticed that the issue occurs far more frequently when I try to watch something that is currently being recorded.  I have disabled Direct Play so unsure why actively recording something would affect playback.

The last couple of minutes of the logs are when I tried playing something whilst it was recording and kept getting the spinning circle.  I restarted playback, and restart Emby and got the same result so hopefully the logs will show whats going on.

Thanks,
Warren.
