chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 (edited) Before the roku update. All my files would direct play. Now within seconds the audio starts transcoding? trying to narrow down - roku emby update or roku os update? Yes, older LG tv using HDMI to Roku Streambar, but it never transcoded audio before.... Why?? enclosed are the logs... embyserver.txt ffmpeg-remux-07f282f1-c7ee-47c7-ad97-be4c87d5304a_1.txt UPDATE: Plugged in a Roku Stick 4K that also got the Emy update..same thing, files that have 5.1 have now started to transcode. This roku stick is on a different build of the Rok OS than the Roku Strembar. Of course, playing through Chrome or Firefox is a direct play both audo/video.; same with android phone, direct play of audio/video. UPDATE 2: Roku Ultra same issue, transcoding 5.1 audio when it hasn't before. So three different Roku devices, same issue... Edited May 10 by chrisrobbins1970 updates
speechles 2083 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 (edited) What do you set for this setting? For the AAC 5.1 not to be transcoded this must be set to NO. You also cannot use "Volume Mode" on your Roku and keep surround sound. This must be set to OFF. Once you confirm it is set to OFF, stop playback of the item, then start playback. When Leveling or Night is used only MP3/AAC stereo audio is allowed. No pass-through codecs can be used. Quote Roku's Volume Mode (found under Sound Settings) offers three options to manage audio levels: Off (default), Leveling (consistent volume, ideal for ads), and Night (boosts quiet sounds and lowers loud ones). These settings can be accessed by pressing the * button during content playback or in the audio settings menu. [1, 2, 3] Edited May 10 by speechles
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 UPDATE 3: On a new LG tv with a roku stick 4K connected here are the results....same issue with transcoding audio when it never did before... Now using the emby app from the LG store....Direct Playing.... So, 4 different roku devices; same audio transcoding when it never did before the update..and a different device using the emby app; with direct play; no audio transcodding....hmmmmmm

Because of that the transcoding profile will build a 2 channel stereo capabilities profile. It does this because it expects surround sound to be inside AC3 or EAC3 when transcoding. With AAC 5.1 we could allow this through during transcoding. The logic could be built where it would allow this when lack of Dolby/Dolby-Digital is found. But why is is transcoding in the first place? In order to get this far something else had to tell it that the audio channels maximum was too high for direct playback. What is that something else? ----- aac-audiochannels=2 If you really have everything set the way you have said then something very peculiar is going on here. You might need to send logs from the Roku app after one of these playback attempts. We would need to see how the capabilities profile is being built on that Roku. For it to build this incorrectly it must not detect support for 6 channel AAC .. or .. the server is just not correctly detecting things and just giving stereo back. In order to know which of these scenarios is happening we would really need app logs from the Roku. Do you know how to send app logs from the Roku app? Edited May 10 by speechles
speechles 2083 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 (edited) 6 minutes ago, chrisrobbins1970 said: Is that the enable debug?? Yes. Enable debug. Once you enable it press HOME to exit the app. You must exit to get the homescreen fully rebuilt. Restart the app and the homescreen loads. Once it fully loads move up to your user icon at the top of the homescreen and there will be a new option "Send debug logs" at the very buttom under switch server. You just need to recreate the issue with the same file. Then send logs. Then come back here and mention what time you did that in Eastern Standard TIme (EST) and which username was logged in when the log was sent. The system only tracks time submitted and usernames. Then the logs are only kept for 3 days. So you have to tell us rather quickly when you do this. Edited May 10 by speechles
ebr 16429 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Were all these tests with the different devices done with the same TV? You said "new TV" does that mean you just got this TV?
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 (edited) Three different tvs, three different Roku devices, same movie, same results....however one of the tvs is a new LG that got a few months ago; been using a Roku Stick on it,but on that LG tv tried the Emby app and there was no transcoding using the same movie Edited May 10 by chrisrobbins1970
ebr 16429 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 The device is reporting support for only 2-channels with AAC. Therefore, we are converting to something that supports multi-channel (AC3/DD). I'm not sure what could have changed here in the app that would affect this. Most of the time, it is kinda the other way around - the device reports support for 5.1 AAC (because it can accept it as an input) but, when fed that, it mixes it down to 2-channel. That's why we have the option that we do to preserve the surround mix in that instance. In this instance though the system is only reporting support for 2 channels so we are converting regardless of the option setting. I wonder if a Roku firmware update has made this change - now reporting support for only 2-channel instead of 5.1 like it used to. 1
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 Thats the strange thing three rokus are on Roku OS 15.2.4 Build 3442 and the other Roku that is connected to the new LG tv is 15.1, has not updated to the 15.2.4 yet and is getting the same results. Agreed something has changed. The Roku OS 15.2.4 build 3442 rolled out this month May 2026...so maybe??, then why woudl the other roku stick not having the update still have the same results. . Here is the mediainfo for the Tales From The Darkside...ALL movies but a few have the same settings and have been playing direct play for years UNTIL this month....
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 Is it possbile; for testing...to use the previous verion of the roku BETA to see if can narrow down?? I am willing to try on my Roku..i also use the Roku Beta...and same results
speechles 2083 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 (edited) It isn't the Roku firmware. I've just played tons of things on all my Roku using AAC 5.1 just fine. Roku cannot direct play AAC 5.1 but it will lie to you like it is a capable of doing so. It will report in everything it is playing the AAC 5.1 stream directly. But if you check the output of your audio device it will really only be 2 channel stereo. The other channels are silence. So in effect you can never really playback AAC 5.1 with a Roku. This is why the setting exists is to convert that to AC3 (Dolby). So that surround isn't lost. Roku will actively downsample using the Roku hardware itself to decimate the AAC 5.1 to AAC 2.0 on some Roku models. Other Roku models produce silence with AAC 5.1. But your ffmpeg log is showing that the Roku is telling the server it only supports 2 channel audio. There is a reason for this. We just need to discover the reason. The Roku uses the Audio settings to detect the HDMI-CEC chain. If it misdetects anything you can always force the settings. Which is what you may have to do. Notice it also says you do not have AC3 (Dolby) which is quite strange for a modern Television. Please check the Roku Audio settings and let us know what you have set for those sections. Thanks. chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 The above photo...my audio settings are set to AUTO..always has been..
speechles 2083 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I am saying AUTO may not work best. Please try to force. "Use the force, Luke. Trust me" - Obi Wan
speechles 2083 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 Just now, chrisrobbins1970 said: ah..ok....so change to custom ( dolby ) Yes. The Roku firmware update may have borked their auto-detection. Which in turn, since our relies on theirs working correctly, borks ours. AAC 5.1 works on my TV with Auto so does Dolby detection. But I am using a TCL Roku TV. On the Samsung I have it also works. But I do not have an LG to test on. Roku might not be doing things correctly for that system. It might be the HDMI cable is not properly sending signals. Either way forcing to custom should fix everything. Hopefully. Let us know what happens. Thanks.
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 OK...my daughter in-law is having no issues.... Roku Stick 4K audio settings are on AUTO.. HOWEVER her Roku OS build is 15.1.4 build 3321and mine is 15.2.4 build 3442.. She has made no changes to her ROKU or her TV. Her TV is a newer Vizio...
chrisrobbins1970 83 Posted May 10 Author Posted May 10 OK..forcing the audio on my ROKU to DOLBY..did not fix the issue..same audio transcoding...
