Home screen not loading (suddenly)

so last night, I was unable to connect to my server. running ubuntu on the server side, client is a roku. I just get the spinning circle, nothing else happens. apparently it is able to see the server, because when I tried to log in manually I can see the illegal login on the events list. tried a few different things (manually log in, add a new server with the IP address) but all failed.

when I first went back to the server, I had a message saying I need to update my server, which I did. that didn't change anything.

to be clear, this issue started before I updated the server, and persists after. tried to update the roku app, said it was up to date.

any advice on how to troubleshoot?

            thanks.

I can login fine but shows no content. this happened after roku updated to 4.1.59 i have another tv running an earlier version and it has not problems. I guess the issue is with the latest update. Like I said my server logs show the login is fine so i defiantly connected to the server. A side note I hate the fact the roku does not allow you to NOT update.

I am having what seems to the same issue. Emby Roku app logins into my server and I can select a user. But then I just get a continuously spinning wheel on the Emby home screen.

Emby Does NOT Work
Roku Ultra 15.2.4.3459
Emby App 4.1.59

Emby Does NOT Work
Roku Streaming Stick 4K 15.2.4.3459
Emby App 4.1.59

Emby Still Works
TCL Roku TV 15.1.4.3334
Emby App 4.1.59

I have restarted the Emby Server. I have shutdown the Emby server and then manually launched it. Restarted my computer. Restarted Roku. Installed and re-installed the Emby Roku app. Nothing.

I can see my Emby server activity logs showing "Username has authenticated on..." for each time I logged in on the various Roku devices.

Everything was literally working fine one moment watching a movie. Later that same day, ate dinner, went to bed, tried to watch a show to wind down, and the above issues started.

This started on 4/30/2026.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

So the same app version works fine on that one device?

What else is different?  Settings?  User?  Login behavior?

I did verify, mine is 4.1.59 as well. not sure when the update pushed, where can I find that, if anywhere?

Here is so more info from me. This morning when I woke up 2 of my tcl roku tv's had updated to 4.1.59 1 had not. the had not works fine. the updated do not work i can login and the server log show i have logged in. there is just no content the app on the tv works just no content. an hour ago my other roku updated to 4.1.59 now that has the same problem. so i would assume the update is the issue. if you need  more info just ask. a note that has nothing to do with emby i  just hate the fact that roku forces app updates (and no way to roll back)

So this is very interesting...

I posted my original reply about an hour ago, when I went to each of our Roku devices and wrote down all the version info. As I stated, the TCL Roku TV was working.

I just now went back to the TCL Roku TV to be sure I jotted down the version numbers correctly, per your reply. And, low and behold, Emby is now not working on the TCL Roku TV (I can log in but then it is stuck spinning on the home screen).

All three devices now are not working and having the same issue...

What server version for each of you and on what platform?

My server is running on Windows 11 v4.9.3.0

Exactly what process are you going through to log in?  What is your startup behavior setting in the app?  Exactly what do you see on the screen?

What home screen sections do you have defined and in what order?

Thanks.

In the Roku app my start up behavior is set to "Remember Me" so that the Roku app auto logs in to my server using my (Mark) account. However, when I manually signed out and signed back in, by selecting a server and a user, I still got the same spinning wheel on the home screen. I have a second user that we never use and I basically use that user for testing on the server. I tried manually logging in with that user, and again got the spinning wheel on the home screen.

On the server, my home screen selection for (Mark) is:
Home screen section 1 = My Media
Home screen section 2 = None
Home screen section 3 = None
Home screen section 4 = None
Home screen section 5 = None
Home screen section 6 = None
Home screen section 7 = None

Attached is a photo of the home screen on my Roku Streaming Stick 4K.

Sorry for the glare. It just sits on the home screen and spins. I let it sit there for about 1/2 hour yesterday.

I hope these adequately answer your questions.

Thank you!

So the app is responsive.  You can navigate the top items and get to the user menu, etc.?

What about the "Favorites" tab?

@garyroWhat home sections do you have?

Yes, the app is responsive.

Yes, I can navigate to the top and get to the user menu and the setting (which is how I logged out and logged back in for testing purposes).

So, this is interesting, yes, I can access the favorites tab and it lists my (one and only) favorited tv episode and plays the epsiode.

When I go back to the home tab it sits and spins.

@wixwonkityuntil we can push a fix out, you can make your home screen load by adding any other section to it.  Put a "Continue Watching" section below your My Media and everything should load for you.

Everyone else - do you all have this exact same setup?  Nothing on home except "My Media"?

That worked!!!

Choosing pretty much anything as a second home screen section allows the home screen to load and I can then browse and play media.

Any clue what caused this current behavior?

You're the best.

I appreciate your dedication and tenacity!

yes, this worked for me too, thanks a lot for the workaround.

my server is running on Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS, server version 4.9.3.0.

Okay an update to fix this will go out early next week (that is the fastest we can go with the Roku store - they don't work weekends).

At that time you can go back to your original setup but I strongly suggest you investigate some of the other home screen row options we have available.  They can vastly improve your Emby experience IMO.  This will especially be true with the next server release.

Thanks for the troubleshooting.  It helped get this solved quickly.

I had the same issue started today, but it may have been an issue for a bit. I thought the sever had to be restarted when it occured before, and that fixed the issue until today.

Adding the "Continue Watching" item fixed it instantly.

Running Roku app 4.1 Build 59 and server version 4.9.3.0 on a Windows 10 machine.

Awaiting a permanent fix.

Thanks for the bandage! At least the bleeding is under control. :)

Same here. Server 4.9.3.0 on Windows 11. 3 different Roku tv's.

I also have a Google TV Streamer which works fine.

Must be the latest Roku App

Same issue here, I only have My Media selected and I'm stuck at the spinning wheel.  Glad to hear a fix is in the works.
