Note that, from what we have been told, it is not the splash screen which makes the program slow to start - it is loading the Windows code to run the program which is slow, and the splash screen is thought to be a better look than a blank screen for that period.

In addition to what @pwhodgessaid: There's a "Hide" button at the bottom right. Click it, and you'll see what you'd see when the animation wouldn't be there.
