subtitles not working

I see there is a difference between transcode (working subtitles) and remux (not showing subtitles). This used to work a couple of days ago.

My server can't transcode on the fly, which is why I disabled “Allow video transcoding to a compatible format, if necessary, during media playback.” Or am I misinterpreting that setting?

As a test, I have toggled 'Allow video transcoding to a compatible format, if necessary, during media playback', but it still is 'Reducing bitrate due to quality setting' without showing the subtitles.

 

What I find strange is that I didn’t have any issues before with remux not showing subtitles until yesterday.

Looking for a workaround.
If the user sets the Internet Quality in the player to 4K - 200 Mbps, the stream is Direct Playing. Which is a small hassle to explain to my 80-year old parents how to fix the issue.

 

I see there is an option on server side, but this still forces the stream to remux. How come?

That's fine, but just understand that when you do that, it may cause things to not work.

Did you read the help text underneath the option? Does it apply to them? Did you explore the stats feature in the video player to learn why it wasn't direct playing?

I think this broke for me with the recent update.

Can I revert to previous version in Docker Container to try this out?
Edit: Reverting did not fix it. Weird. Am I tripping Will look further.

With these settings, the player transcode the stream and no subtitles are being shown and the quality is still reduced to 1 Mbps.

 

When I force the highest quality in the player, the subtitles do show:

You haven't shown us any of your settings related to subtitles.  Nor have you specified the type of the subtitles giving problems; nor whether they are default or forced.  Are they separate files or muxed in the video file?  Is this problem occurring with certain specific files, or any files?  Do the subtitles show properly in other programs?

I performed a fresh installation of Emby Server and Emby Theatre for Windows. When playing a movie, it is being transcoded from x265 to x264 (which I don’t want, but I allowed it for testing purposes). However, no subtitles are displayed during playback. Please see the attached logs for details.

When I play the same movie using Emby for Kodi, it plays directly without any transcoding, and the subtitles display correctly.

Additionally, when using any local media player, the subtitles are shown as expected. The subtitle files are named using the following format:

• moviename.dut.default.srt
• moviename.eng.default.srt

All tests are being performed on a local network where bandwidth is not a limiting factor.

In the settings of Emby for Windows, the subtitle options are configured as follows:

• Preferred subtitle language: Dutch
• Subtitle mode: Always
