SRT subtitles not displaying, other unknown subtitles are displaying

So when playing a movie in Emby on Roku, Predator: Badlands for example, the SRT subtitles don't display when I've selected SRT for the subtitles option. However, other subtitles play, which I don't know where they come from or how they are generated. The subtitles that do play are more for the hearing disabled, like it says (Electrical humming) or when the foreign language is spoken, it displays (SPEAKING YAUTJA). However, when playing this exact same movie on Emby on a browser, it displays the proper SRT subtitles. So for example, when it says (SPEAKING YAUTJA) on Emby for Roku, it says "I sense you, brother." on the Emby for the browser.

I have a SRT file in the same folder as the movie's video file and it's named the same as the video file. Here are some screenshots, I've enabled stats for nerds for the Roku playback screenshots which are taken on my TV.

Ok thanks for the quick reply! I sent the log about 2:00 AM Eastern Time. So I started playing the movie (Predator Badlands 2025 1080p.mkv) from the beginning, forwarded several times till those other subtitles displayed. The name of the Emby user is "htpc". Thanks!

Check the embedded subtitles for "forced" flags - these cause unexpected behaviour in the Roku player.

Hi.  It looks like you didn't provide a language in that naming so I'd be sure and do that as well.  Then, you need to look at the embedded subs and be sure they aren't marked default or forced as Roku will force a "forced" sub.

So the name of the subtitles file is Predator Badlands 2025 1080p.srt which is identical to the filename and that usually worked in the past. Are you saying I need to put "english" in the name like "Predator Badlands 2025 1080p.english.srt"? I don't understand why it would work perfectly on the Emby web player and not on the Emby Roku player? I'm not sure what you mean by "embedded subs" in this case, does that mean burnt in subs? Thanks.

How can I look for this?

MKVToolNix is one way; also MediaInfo.

Changing them with MKVToolNix will copy to a new MKV file (not transcoding, though); if the files are already MKV, you can change the flags in place using  jMKVpropedit

But actually, they are shown by Emby at the bottom of the details page for Movies or TV episodes, under the Chapters row.  However, Emby can't change them.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge here, but with MKVToolNix (think I've used this before), can I add my existing MKV video file in it with the SRT subtitles file and it will package it into a new MKV?

Yes; you can add subs as new streams, set default and (if required) forced flags - you can also omit unwanted subtitle streams, which can be handy when files these days may come with 30-odd sets of subs for different languages.

Cool thanks! So do I just rename the SRT file to movie-file-name.english.srt then? Or is there a way to specify language or default subs with the MKVToolNix?

You don't have to match the names, and you can set things like language within the program.  Just run it and see!

So I used mkvtoolnix to add the foreign subtitles in (and removed all other ones),  but unfortunately the Roku Emby player STILL doesn't display them, even though I've selected the subtitles before playing it! What is going on? Thanks.

You may need to make sure those subtitles are for the actual speaking dialogue. Since it says "Foreign Subtitles" I am guessing it might show only the subtitles when the Yautja (Predator) is speaking to the female android and when she speaks in Yautja back to him. In other words, the subtitles only show up when they are not speaking English. If you want subtitles during the entire movie you need to make sure they contain the full dialogue.

Also make sure none of your subtitle tracks have the "forced" flag as the Roku will only show those if so.
