User Perrmissions Dependent on the Content Being Viewed

Ive found that the only way to get proper Dolby Vision playback on the Apple TV 4k 3rd is by disabling some playback permissions for the user. I would like to see an expansion on these settings. Ive attached a picture of what I'm referring to.

I would like to see the ability to change playback permissions for a user depending on the content. Such as if its Dolby Vision content it has a different set of user permissions. Furthermore I would like to see the same thing for the container formats. For example, if the content is a Dolby Vision video and in a MKV container disable the ability to audio and video transcode for the user.

Let me know if i need to explain more.

Thanks

Hi.  What you suggest is just going to create more failures.

If that is the case, we need to look at exactly why that is.  It may be that a conversion or transcode is necessary due to some other factor - like the audio.

Moving this to Apple TV forum for further investigation.

From the testing I've done, every thing plays fine when it comes to Dolby Vision content on the Apple TV 4k when the user playback permissions are disabled. I know others have had the same experience as well. Video, Audio, and Subtitles all direct play when these settings are disabled. The Apple TV itself handles audio conversions to LPCM from TrueHD audio so no need for the server to do it. Just have to make sure the Audio settings on the Apple TV is set to convert to LPCM.

I re enabled changing of container formats to see why it was converting the stream. It is converting the audio codec when its a TRUEHD audio stream and which causes Dolby Vision to play with the improper colors. When I switch the audio to AC3 and play it, the colors for Dolby Vision are correct. What is happening is Emby sees that the Apple TV doesn't support TRUEHD audio natively and converts it to a compatible format which messes with the video stream. The Emby Server doesn't know that the Apple TV can do the conversion on its own and doesn't need the server to do it. By disabling changing of container formats for the user it forces the Emby Server to send the stream directly to the Apple TV and the Apple TV converts the audio to LPCM (another lossless format) while retaining the accurate colors for Dolby Vision. Just have to make sure your audio settings on the Apple TV 4k is set to convert to LPCM which I believe is the default for the device anyway.

Okay, great, that's exactly what I was trying to get to.  We should be able to change the app to no longer require the remux/audio conversion and that will solve the issue for you.

That's great, will this be included in the next Emby App update for Apple TV?

And may I ask will this essentially mean true DV playback in the Emby app? No more having to use Infuse for the occasional DV film? Amazing if so!!

Yes this would be the same as playing Dolby Vision on Infuse. The unnecessary remux / convert of the stream that Emby is doing currently (unless you change user settings) makes Dolby Vision content display incorrectly. If they change this you can keep your user settings normal and play Dolby Vision content correctly.

I also wanted to mention that PGS subtitles are able to be direct played on the Apple TV but Emby Server forces the transcode/burn in of the subtitles unnecessarily unless permissions for video transcoding are disabled for the user. Just wanted to make you aware of this as well.
