This is crazy, my computer said I am running out of space on my root partition which is 1TB in size so I should have several hundred GBs of free space. Apparently the culprit is Emby. Can I delete this folder and it will rebuild it or will I have to be selective with deleting files? Also, why does this happen in the 1st place? Can it not delete these files through some sort of daily maintenance?

❯ sudo du -h /var | sort -hr | head -n 10
[sudo] password for tim:

536G    /var/lib
504G    /var/lib/emby

443G    /var/lib/emby/transcoding-temp
56G     /var/lib/emby/cache
52G     /var/lib/emby/cache/xmltv
28G     /var/lib/docker
27G     /var/lib/docker/volumes/winboat_data/_data

Change your transcoding temp path to a different mount/filesystem.

Manage Server -> Transcoding

Edit to add: Emby is supposed to cleanup after itself but that doesn't always happen. Runaway sessions, mostly LiveTV, can also cause unexpected growth in the transcoding temp path. You can delete temporary segments that are older without problem.

Thanks for the tip!

It is a suggestion but not a solution. Do we know why this happens? I had transcodes going back to mid Jan so Emby has not done any maintenance on these for almost a month.

I would delete those now and if you catch it happening then please supply the Emby server log:

Thanks
