Hello Devs, I have a technical question.

On my Shield Pro 2019 the Emby app always plays HDR content just fine. This is not the case with Apple TV app and Prime Video apps.

What happens is this: both of those apps will play DV content right after Shield reboot but until it goes to standby. After the standby wake up Emby still works fine but Apple TV and Prime Video won't play HDR anymore. I am wondering: what does the Emby app do differently. Is there an extra check for HDR features before each playback that the other apps are not doing?

Unplugging the HDMI cable from the back of the Shield while its running fixes the issue (until the next standby), so does rebooting the Shield.

My connection chain is as follows: Shield Pro -> Yamaha A6A -> LG G3 65". All HDMI cables have been replaced recently with certified 48Gbps cables but that didn't make a difference.

Thanks!

Why are you asking Emby how to solve an 'Apple TV and Prime Video problem?

You should ask this on their forums or redit/😕

Asking here because apparently Emby knows what they are doing and Apple/Amazon don't.

No this is a Shield problem, and you should be asking Nvidia. You could just disable standby on your Shield. It's not like it uses a lot of power to begin with.

If it is a Shield problem how come Emby app works fine?

Exactly which app?  What version?

Emby App for Android TV ver2.1.21g.

That is an old version but my best guess at why it is working is that maybe you have the option to match frame rate or resolution selected and that causes the app to re-set the video display mode before playback which then corrects whatever HDMI handshake issue you are having.

That's a good guess, however I messed with the match frame rate option and it does not affect the issue. Resolution is 4K for all the content, tried 60Hz and 59.94Hz, match frame rate on/off, match color space on/off, none of those make any difference. Emby's HDR works after standby the other app's don't. :(

This is the latest Emby app version available in the Google Play Store afaik

The latest release in Google Play is 2.1.23 and on the beta track it is 2.1.34 just FYI.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and now it is indeed 2.1.23. I have automatic updates on and for some reason it didn’t update itself.
