Emby's Media Player Codec/Format/Sub Support to Limit Transcoding?

Hi :)

When I first installed Emby ages ago, I noticed that when playing a file on my Emby server that it needed to be transcoded, but then I installed VLC and had the Emby server use that instead, and then when I played any file, the Emby Dashboard always said it was playing via "Direct Play" (I assume because VLC supports lots of codecs etc, even if the device doesn't, but I could be wrong. Feel free to correct me :) ).

Does the Emby media player now support more codecs like VLC does? (to help minimize a client/device having to transcode the media, if using VLC as the media player on a client device)

I don't have access to the server (it's up at my step-mom's place) to test.

But yeah, was just curious about that. If Emby's media player can now natively support more formats/codecs/subs like VLC does, then that'd be nice and one less thing to do/install on any client devices.

Or if I'm confused and/or things don't work that way, just let me know as well :)

I was just curious :)

HI, it depends on what device you're playing from, and what software you are using to play. So what device and app?

Nvidia Shield and the app is VLC. When I played the file ages ago on the Nvidia Shield with the built-in Emby media player, it had to transcode some of my files, but then I set Emby to use VLC and the files said they were Direct Playing instead of transcoding.

Thanks Luke :)

I didn't have to make a new thread and could've just tested it myself the next time I was up at my step-mom's place, but decided to ask anyway.

And when I say ages ago, I think this was like 8 years ago lol

I apologize for wasting your time, but also thank you for indulging me.
