'Search' issue with multi-version movies

I was wondering whether there is any solution to my use case. For a number of movies of my choosing—mainly animated titles and some classics—I keep two versions of the same movie, named as follows:

• Movie_name (year) – dubbing
• Movie_name (year) – subtitles

These are usually the same video file, differing only by the audio track.

Whenever a movie or animation has a dubbed version, I set the metadata to be stored in my language (Polish) and add the movie to collections such as Classics, Dubbing, Louis de Funès, etc. This is where the problem begins.

At first glance, everything looks fine. When I browse these collections, the movie appears correctly (with a dropdown menu to choose between the dubbing and subtitles versions), all metadata is in Polish, and the movie is included in the appropriate collections. The same applies when I browse the movie library manually (opening the library and scrolling to the translated movie title).

However—and I discovered this by accident—when I use the search function by title, it almost always returns the original title with metadata in English (the default metadata language), without any collections assigned (though still with the dropdown menu to choose the version).

I believe this happens because two separate NFO files are created for the dubbing and subtitles versions.

My main question is:
Is there a way to modify both NFO files at once, or can this only be achieved by writing a Python script that copies all metadata from Movie_name (year) – dubbing.nfo to Movie_name (year) – subtitles.nfo? Alternatively, is it possible to exclude the latter version from search results (since search seems to be the only way this metadata version appears)?

I am not entirely sure if I have explained this clearly, so I am attaching screenshots with an example of Lilo & Stitch (Lilo i Stich in Polish), which has two movies with the same title—one from 2002 and one from 2025—both of which I keep in double versions.

@cochize1 there are two different movies in your screenshot: the older cartoon from 2002 and the new live action one from 2025.

This seems to be working as intended, these are actually two different movies.

Clicking on the 2025 Lilo & Stitch should cause the 2025 version to show.

Clicking on the 2002 Lilo i Stich should cause the 2002 version (with your multiversion) to show.

Also, if you look at the URL for both items, it should look something like this: https://app.emby.media/#!/item?id=XXXXX&serverId=XXXX
Can you check if the id=XXXXX values are both the same for the English and Polish versions?

That's not what i meant. When I click on 'Lilo i Stich' 2025 in my movie media library i get the metadata I edited (movie added to collections, metadata in Polish, updated ratings etc) whereas when i search for the movie in search results it gives me unedited English nfo without collections, ratings etc. On the other case 'Lilo i Stitch' 2002 shows edited version with collections and Polish metadata in both, search results and direct library access. All I want is to see only Polish updated metadata for the movies I have a double version of.

this is for Polish version directly from movie library:

Hi, not currently, but this aspect of multi-version is something that we need to look at improving.

so for now the best solution in my case is to either manually edit both nfo's to the same version or use some batch script that would copy data from *dubbing.nfo to *subtitles.nfo and then Scan Metadata Folder? Also, what is the logic behind the search results? Why for some movies see metadata from one version and for some for the other?

Correct yes. It’s because the version you will see is arbitrary.

For anyone who's interested. I ended up writing a short script with a little help of my best friend chat gpt that simply copies contents of the nfo containing '* - Dubbing.nfo' to '* - Subtitles.nfo' within the same folder. Takes around 30 sec to do that and simple library scan is enough to update all afterwards. You can find it attached and use it to your liking.dubbing.py
