LG TV has a problem playing videos with embedded subtitles.

Hi @Luke

I'm creating a new topic because I don't know if you understand the error in the Emby app on LG TVs regarding the subtitles embedded in the files.

I'm sending the server log and a video showing the subtitle error.

After the update, on my LG TV (apparently only LG), when playing a video with original audio and subtitles embedded in the video file, accented letters are replaced with symbols.

However, if I switch to a separate .SRT subtitle file in the folder (not embedded in the video), the system recognizes all accents correctly.

I tested with video files in .Mkv x264 and .Mkv 265 formats. The problem occurs in both video encoding formats and also in the subtitle encoding formats (UTF-8 with BOM and 125: Western Europe). I don't know what else I can say, please tell me what you need me to say.

None of my series have the subtitle file (.srt) separately in the folder; they're only embedded within the movie files.

That's why this fix is important. I wouldn't want to have to extract each subtitle file from every video file.

Hi, can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks.

I already sent a video showing where the problem occurs, but I don't think it was for you.

I'm sending another, longer video to demonstrate.

In Portuguese, we use accents like ã, é, ê and ç.

Not all accents are recognized when the video uses the subtitles embedded in the video file. But when I switch to an external subtitle file, which is the .srt file, then the system recognizes all accents.

The problem is that the Emby app system on LG TVs only recognizes the accents of the languages .

The image shows the video file with the embedded subtitles.

In this case, there's also a separate .srt subtitle file in the folder.

Luke is not asking for a video demonstration of the issue, he is asking you to provide a sample video file that causes the issue, something with an embedded subtitle.

The video I sent demonstrates exactly what happens when the subtitles are embedded (with an error) and when they are external (.srt) subtitles.

I also sent an image from the video showing how the subtitles are embedded in the video.

I don't know what else I can show.

The Greys Anatomy srt file is a "forced" file with only a few entries.  This is normal use of a "forced" subtitle which is used to only show either text that appears on the screen in original English or if the content has an audio version, dubbed or original, "forced" subtitles shows translation when the characters speak in a different language.

For example, an English film taking place in Paris and a waiter at a cafe speaks French. An English forced subtitle will only show the translation of the waiter.  This is not to be confused with burned in subtitles that are often made for the original film to show these 2nd language translations.

So the short subtitle attached above is a normal forced subtitle for Portuguese.  It is not broken or wrong.  There should also be a full Portuguese subtitle available.  Often the media creator may set the forced as the default subtitle. You can check and adjust which subtitle is forced and which are set as default, if you look at the media file with MKVtools.

To set any separate subtitle file, as default, follow the guide for subtitle naming in Emby. Look up subtitles.

Some foreign film (1999) - 1080P.mkv

Some foreign film (1999) - 1080P.en.srt

Some foreign film (1999) - 1080P.en.forced.default.srt

In this case, the video only has the full subtitles, not the forced subtitles, because it doesn't yet have the dubbed audio in Portuguese.

The file is small because I couldn't upload the complete video due to the file size. But the subtitles are full.

I only use forced subtitles for dubbed languages, when text appears on the screen like text messages, for example.

Until the recent system update, I never had problems with the misconfiguration of accented characters in subtitles embedded in the video.

In MKVTools itself, I already have the subtitle language selected, so for TV series I don't even use external subtitles, only the embedded subtitles, whether they are Full or Forced.

The problem shouldn't be in how I assemble the files, since I've been doing it this way for years. It's in the character encoding in embedded subtitles.

The problem occurs in both x264 and x265 MKV files, regardless of whether they contain both audio tracks (original and dubbed) or just one.
Remember that the embedded subtitle file in the video is the same subtitle file (.srt) that is external. And the error only occurs in the embedded subtitle.

Take the Fallout series as an example.

Hi @Luke, sorry to be persistent, but I'd like to know if you're already looking into the subtitle problem on LG TVs.

It's proving quite complicated here.

You said this is only on embedded right? Can you please provide a copy of the video? Thanks

Hi @Luke, I had already sent a short video from the Grey's Anatomy series. In case you haven't seen it, I'm sending it again.

It's just a piece of an episode from the Fallout series.

This one has both audio tracks (original and dubbed) and both subtitles embedded (Forced = DUBLADO + Full).

Please take a look at this, because I only watch with subtitles and I don't leave full subtitle files lying around in the folder.

Just so you know, my LG TV's firmware was updated in December.

Aha, I see it's not a forced sub issue... Sorry.

Go to this site:

 https://online-fonts.com/languages/portuguese

Enter in this text in the text example pull down area (1 page down)
 ã, é, ê and ç Portuguese, we use accents

The first few pages should show which fonts work for Portuguese.  There are over 10,000 fonts, so you can check which font the LG TV is using, if you can find it's name.  Maybe the LG default font is just not compatible.  Can you change the font on the TV to something that is compatible?

Most of the normal fonts seem to work, Times, Roman, Arial.  Many fonts starting with "Romantic" fail.  LG Display does work.  I wonder if the LG is using some odd font that looks good on the TV.

Hope that helps.

But @visproductionI don't have to change the font or encoding in my files, because with the external subtitle (which is exactly the same .srt file that is embedded in the video file) there is no problem decoding the accents.
And this is a new problem, occurring after the Emby system update. Everything always ran correctly before the Emby update.

If there was a problem with the font type on the LG TV, the error would also occur in the external subtitles. OK.

Thank you for your attention, as always :)

@Люк

Good evening, I also have a problem on my LG webOS TV. I updated the emby today, and it turns out the subtitles aren't Russian either. I don't understand some kind of nonsense there.🤣

On the old version, all the subtitles were in Russian, but after the update, all the subtitles are neither Russian nor English. Here's how I sent you a photo. Thank you.

Hi @Luke, were the files I sent sufficient?
Are you already able to verify this problem in the Emby update for LG TVs?

Same here LG TV app 1.0.49
Tulsa King SDH subs when trying to display a music note for example S03E02 a few seconds in.
Or Swedish subs when there is Å Ä Ö.

Only when embedded if I download external srt-file it works.

Hi @Luke

I just downloaded the Emby app update for my LG TV, but the problem with the embedded subtitles was NOT fixed. So I'm reporting this here.

I really thought this update would fix the problem.

For the record, the problem persists in version 1.0.50. (LG App)

Hola.

Hello.

As mentioned previously, the client application installed on the LG TV is not correctly recognizing symbols and accents (Spanish) in the subtitles of an MKV video. I would venture to say it must be a problem with the player, since the same error occurs both when viewing the MKV on the PC where the server is located and on the LG TV where the client is installed. However, the characters work fine on the Emby navigation screens.

This issue has arisen with the last two updates; it didn't happen before.

Hi @Luke

I'd like to know if it will still take a while for them to fix this problem with Emby for LG TVs.
It's been more than 2 weeks since I noticed the problem.

Sorry for insisting, but it's becoming too disruptive.
