Currently I have all of my documentaries either in my TV shows library, or my Movies library. Then I've created a Collection called "Documentaries" that has them all listed.

I recently considered creating a separate library called "Documentaries" that would allow me to have them in their own library, but I'm realizing that some of them are TV show episode based, and some are movie based. I've been reading up on how others set things up, and people seem to have a negative experience using the "mixed content" option

Anyone have any advice about how to set any of this up properly in 2026? Is my setup the best option?

Well if they are

movies pr. metadata providers depending on provider set them up as that

folder structure wise.

If metadata suggest they are tv series, the set them up as tv shows

folder structure wise.

Never done this my self but remembering my battle with metadata about Red Rose (2002).

And in the day I thought it was a long movie 😁

As long as you have the proper metadata providers enabled, and the files properly named, you can have them all in there. I have a documentaries section that is both movies and TV shows and it's only the documentaries that are part of a tv series, that are an issue. So for example, if documentary is presented as a movie, but it is instead an episode of a long running tv series, just that it is "identified" as a movie or special, it can become a problem. It always comes down to the metadata that is available, and the wankers at TVDB always find a way to screw things up. Just be on top of your naming scheme and your fight should be minimal.

I have them mixed in the same folder too. When creating the new library, select Mixed Content. Just make sure your Movies and TV shows have been identified.

When using Mixed Content library type, it is especially important to follow Emby's Movie and TV naming guidelines closely, as the folder structure is the main thing which enables Emby to decide which items are of each type.
