Remote User Unable to Connect to My Emby Server — Are These Instructions Right?

Hi everyone, I run an Emby server on my Windows PC and I’m trying to help someone connect remotely from their phone. Because I only ever see the server side, I don’t get to see what the remote user sees on their mobile app, so I want to confirm whether the instructions I’m giving them are correct.

Here’s the situation:

I’ve set up remote access for a friend, but they couldn’t log in on their first attempt. This isn’t unusual — in my experience, the first attempt rarely works for anyone I’ve set up before. I suspect the system may have been confused by their very long email address, so I’m trying a different approach.

Below are the instructions I gave them. Could someone confirm if these are the correct steps for a remote user connecting from a phone?

Instructions I Provided (no credentials included):

  1. Open the Emby app

  2. Tap “Add Server” (Ignore “Sign in with Emby Connect”)

  3. In the Server Address field, enter: emby.media If that doesn’t connect, try: http://emby.media

  4. Tap Next

  5. When prompted for login details, enter the assigned username and assigned password (not using email) but the username from the profile on Emby server Tanya as seen in picture , I have erased her email from this picture before i gave her email to login with

  6. this was my previous instructions that did not work ,,

Here’s how to log into Emby on your phone or tablet:

Install the Emby app - Open Google Play Store - Search for “Emby for Android” - Tap Install

Open the app - Tap the Emby icon

Sign in with Emby Connect - Tap “Sign in with Emby Connect” - Enter your email: xxxxxxxxxx  (or it might ask for the display name, which is TanyaFamily) - Enter your password:  - Tap Log In

Connect to the server - Tap JACK RABBIT SLIMS - You’ll see movies and shows - tap to play

If anything doesn’t work, message me and I’ll help 💬

  7. this part I don't know were i got it from as  (or it might ask for the display name, which is TanyaFamily) is the display name the one in the picture , i gave these instructions a long time ago and cant remember but if it is it seems i changed it or is display name something else

If anyone can confirm whether this is the correct method — or if I should be instructing them differently — I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

If not using Emby Connect then they would have to enter your domain name or IP and the port number, not emby.media - unless you replaced your actual domain with that value, which is definitely understandable for posting on the forum. Then they would log in with the local credentials, which based on your screenshot is Tanya and whatever password you assigned.

Why would the original instructions not work for Emby connect

I don't know, I don't use Emby Connect. Seems accurate to me, they would log in with their Emby Connect email and password that they set up and the server should appear there if you already linked the account.

If she logs  in the other way not Emby Connect will she have to do that always, like login every time

No, the server is remembered. All my friends and family add the server manually with my domain and port.

I just tell them when they first open the app that it will prompt for Emby Connect to hit skip and enter my domain and port 443. Don't need to mention http or https in the server address, based on my testing they don't even need to put the port it will automatically try a couple ports I guess. I just tried it with only my domain name and it logged right in.

If you don't have a domain then it sounds like you're relegated to using the IP address, in which case it would be better for them to stick with Emby Connect, but you could look into a free Dynamic DNS service, they will provide you with a domain name to use.

I have other family members using this remotely , I can remember having problems but it so long ago I can't remember , that surely means they must have connected through connect , for it to work for them''. I presume the ip address way means you have to login every time

No you still don't need to log in every time, maybe if your IP address changes that's what you're thinking of but that's exactly what emby connect attempts to solve. A dynamic DNS service would also work.

Yes, your "previous" instructions for Emby Connect were fine.

As long as Tanya has registered an Emby Connect account here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/register/

You also need to add her email address to the (Optional) field on her local user account.

After she installs the app, instruct her to login with Emby Connect using the email address and password that she used to register above and she will be presented with your server without needing to know any more details. That's it.

That means they tried to do a direct login to your server rather than signing in with emby connect.

As I previously advised, your previous instructions were already correct (with the exception of the display name):

Quote

Here’s how to log into Emby on your phone or tablet:

Install the Emby app - Open Google Play Store - Search for “Emby for Android” - Tap Install

Open the app - Tap the Emby icon

Sign in with Emby Connect - Tap “Sign in with Emby Connect” - Enter your email: xxxxxxxxxx  (or it might ask for the display name, which is TanyaFamily) - Enter your password:  - Tap Log In

It is simply 4 steps:

  1. Sign in with Emby Connect
  2. Enter email address
  3. Enter password
  4. click 'Sign In'

Use these instructions, and provide a more recent example if there is a failure. Good luck.

This is correct.  Your original instructions were telling them to "skip" Emby Connect...
