Emby on Nvidia Shield TV Pro vs Sony Bravia 7 App

Hi,

I just recently purchased a Sony Bravia 7 which will be installed next week. I'm curious as to the differences between continuing to use my Nvidia Shield TV Pro vs installing the app for the Sony TV.

Would performance and quality of movies be roughly the same or is there a big difference between the two? Do they both support the same file types?

I have never, repeat never, seen a TV Emby app that performs well over time. They are almost all wireless, one point of failure, and their software quits updating after a year, some times less, and it is usually quite hard to use the TV apps for almost anything due to poor software design.

It is "covenant" but you pay for convenience with aggravation.

Some people have decent luck with their TV actually running apps but set top boxes are generally a LOT easier to use and a good deal more stable. Plus if something fails requiring service you are without everything while you wait for service.

It is just not worth the hassle.

However, "smart" TVs are generally cheaper than their dumb equivalent which is why my last TV purchase was a TCL smart TV but I use none of its "smarts" and I have my Shield and my Roku and my Fire TV all plugged in and I use them to watch content on my Smart TV completely independent of the TV's so called smarts, which have proven to be quite dumb.

Note: I did test a number of the TV's apps and every single one was sluggish and hard to use.
I use my Shield for almost 90% (maybe 95%) of my TV viewing. I have been toying with the idea of retiring all my Fire equipment and only keeping my Rokus and Shield and the Roku only because there are two apps I regularly use that are Roku only.

I believe the Sony TVs run Android natively on them so the experience would be the same, but if you already have a Shield it is certainly the superior device to use to run the app, most likely to be able to direct play everything and (probably) faster despite its age.

Should be pretty close,  Just check the specs - Sony is pretty thorough listing what it will and won't play.

My KD55x85K is good. It handles content my rather new Roku chokes on with no problem.  As with many newer devices the wireless end is better than the wired and has never hiccuped even once, make sure you enable the widest bandwidth per channel on your router (40, 80, 160 mhz) available.  Mine connects to  an Asus RT-AX86U in AP mode with 2.5 gig back haul, a bit overkill but again no issue except the TV itself won't handle 60 fps 4k h264 (it is asking a bit much

It runs the standard Android Emby no problem and is snappy even with 60fps 4k H265/HEVC content.

I would put your new device through its paces before considering a Shield.

I have the Bravia 9, there is some stuttering for some movies but from what I can gather other people share the same problems on android tv, not related to the Sony.

Shield is far superior hardware and I doubt the Sony will do TrueHD audio.
