jglazer63 22 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I have a Netgear ReadyNas and we all know (that have this) the app installs don't work any longer (at least for Emby). I am interested in maybe replacing it. Can anyone recommend an alternative? Thanks for the help!
Bims0n 14 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 (edited) If you want a mature and good devloped all-in-1 software environment go for Synology. Be careful with the model and it's ability to (not) hardware transcode, they want to cancel H265 support in the long run. Also their hardware specs kinda falls behind current standards. If you want an excellent hardware package with an experimental OS that is still finding it's place then go for Ugreen. Note however that this is a chinese developer, therefore nobody can garantuee that telemetry of your data are submitted to their homebase. So maybe some tinkering with an custom OS is needed here to avoid this. Edited January 1 by Bims0n
jglazer63 22 Posted January 2 Author Posted January 2 Thanks @BimsOn. I was actually looking at synology. UGreen seems popular on amazon but know nothing about them. I'll watch for the hardware transcoding thing. Any model Synology you recommend? Thanks!
Bims0n 14 Posted January 2 Posted January 2 (edited) 425+ is one of the most popular for beginners but tbh this completely depends on your storage needs and some other variables. If you go for the 225+ or 425+ you will need to install the appropiate module to enable quicksync hardware transcoding again since it is disabled by default. This requires some tinkering, it does not work out of the box! Synology might also patch this in the future, it is currently unknown how they react to kernel modifications on their devices. https://github.com/007revad/Transcode_for_x25 Other 25+ models have the AMD Ryzen V1500B or V1600, which does not have an iGPU and therefore no hardware transcoding!
