Update 4.9.1.90 freezes under load

Sunday I noticed my server freezing up, even though my TV played, maybe because of the buffer, once in a while it did buffer for about a second and then kept going.

I was recording I believe two football games and two TV programs,

I believe I had 11 streams playing various channels.

7 was watching colts football

2 was watching Green Bay football

2 was watching recorded programs

However when I went to select the recording of Green Bay, keep in mind it was still recording, I noticed the screen didn't load after selecting it. So I thought well maybe a glitch, so I go back to the main screen and then try clicking on it again nothing. I completely exit emby and then try to load it back up and the server doesn't load. However my TV Nvidia box was still playing the football game on another TV.  Even though it did freeze for about a second or less and kept playing.. every time my TV started to play I noticed that the server was loading again on the other TV for a short time. I have noticed this issue while trying to play a recording that was still recording in the past, but usually it lives up that loads up slow. So I remote desktop into the server, since it's at a remote location on a 1G fiber line, to see what's going on, I'm not quite understanding why the server is having trouble loading if it's not using but 15% of the CPU on 1 or 2 cores out of 16. Probably using 1-3% of the total CPU. I'm not sure why emby is not using all the CPU cores.. it's been like this since I noticed it in the beginning. However no big deal because it usually never uses more than 50 to 70% of One core let alone 16.. but I never had trouble with it sticking this bad. It's having trouble keeping up with tasks.. also I've noticed in a few other people have said something about live stream stopping at the top of the hour or half past.. no big deal because all you got to do is start the string back again. I remember in the past removing a plug-in or two that resulting in speeding up that process.. however I'm not quite sure why it's not at least trying to use the CPU power regardless of if a plug-in is causing the issue or not. But at this point I'd rather just get the issue resolved. I'm not quite sure what I have my current log set to, but I'm at attempt to go back to Sunday and grab up the log file maybe there's something in there that can be looked at. I'm not sure it's a result from the recent update, but that's the current version that I'm at. If switching to the beta is more benefits than glitches, I'm willing to give it a try. I'll be back with that log file hopefully going to dig into it now.

Edit: just wanted to make sure that my computer set up was fresh

CPU Intel 7 4.2 Ghz 16 core

GPU Nvidia 3050

16g ram

1tb NVMe SSD os and server

1th NVMe SSD Samsung the Fast number I can't remember what it was guessing 915 used for temp and transcoding.

512 NVMe SSD temp for Comskip and MCeBuddy

6 HHDs movies random sizes

1 7tb hhd for emby DVR

2 Home run quad tuners

3 IPTV providers, 2 with 4 max connections, 1 with 5 max connections. Channels all strip for only English channels.

Anything else that might be needing that's important just ask

I mostly direct stream 99% of the time no need for transcoding but I have successfully transcoded 10 plus streams without issues in the past.

Here is the log file, when I went back and looked at a message where the issue did exist definitely 4:48 p.m. Sunday the 14th

I selected anonymize,

However there's anything in there that don't need to be public then please remove the file after downloading, greatly appreciated.

When I was looking at it earlier it appeared that there is lots and lots and lots of those log files, not sure why there's so many but you're saying you want all them I can group them all up from that day and zip them up or 7z

OK we are looking into it. Thanks.

Not a problem, it used to be a lot worse.. have a pause at the top of every hour. But I stopped converting on my files using emby and now I use MCE buddy..  and then I went through and cleaned up all the recordings that were in there that were not recording anything anymore. Maybe there's something I missed, I'm not sure why the convert function is still functioning when I have no convert jobs. I did notice that the other day. But anyways I had a lot of tasks on both of those menus it kind of just builds up over time.  But it seems like the problem had disappeared for quite some time I'm not sure why the problem has came back.

Maybe it has nothing to do with any of this but just wanted you to know for your knowledge.

I'm just dumped on why my emby is lacking power and it's not eating up my CPU at all.

When this current problem happens none of my CPUs show any difference. They all bumping around somewhere between two and 10% at the time that emby is stuck.

Thanks in advance I know you're busy and all

Just wanted to let you know, I just ran into this issue, not sure if it's this update related or not.. search box was not working, movie trailer is not working.

Directed the person to download the new emby app from the Play store on their Nvidia box..

When the search comes up at the Play store it's still standing the person to the old app.

In order to get the new app they had to scroll all the way down to related results at the very bottom of the screen... After installing the new app everything started working.

Maybe it's almost time to remove the old app from the play store? So the new one shows up?

If somebody needs the older app they can side load it. Example I do have an older Android box at work and it does use the older app and the new one is not compatible stuck on an old Android version.

Monday night football, all kinds of problems out of ESPN didn't matter which provider..

When I pull my stats up it says hls I believe at the top and then an arrow like maybe it's a transcoding? But then under that it says direct play video?

Now I'm confused on why it would transcode that.. it should be direct streaming.. but when I go to WTHR 6.1 Indianapolis it plays fine no transcode... At the top it says direct direct.

Sorry I've been super busy with christmas, I'll try to get log file

Sorry I've been busy with the holidays I wasn't able to get that long file. However there will be plenty more issues like that it seems like it's an ongoing issue.

While trying to resolve the stickiness of my server I've been trying to purge and get rid of things that I no longer need. Is that in the log file maybe you can tell me what I don't need because I don't need anything that I don't need.

Also I want to change my transcoding temporary folder from my c drive to a virtual ram disk drive, but I'm limited to 8GB on this drive and so I go to see if I can limit the time on the DVR, and the minimum time is 1 hour, so I go to my transcoding folder to see how much space it's taking up and it's taking up 20 gigs constantly with the least four to five people watching. Is there a way to disable that? I don't need people pausing TV or rewinding anything. Or maybe there's a way to limit it less than 1 hour, like say 5 minutes? I don't think anybody needs to pause longer than the bathroom break.

So to test to see if that's causing any issue I decided to switch to a fast hhd, maybe the SSD is warming up and slowing down which is a common issue with those.

So then I go on to look at my temporary folder, it's storing tons of pictures for all the stuff that's ever been loaded it's going on 30 GB, how do I stop that? I don't need pictures, I've deleted this folder in the past and it rebuilds it but I don't need it being 30 GB. I have a 1G fiber line and it can download and display those on the fly.

I really need this resolved before the super bowl. Greatly appreciated.

So far I think the only thing that is causing it to majorly stick is when somebody goes to play something that's currently recording, example a football game and then somebody sees it recording so then they just selected off the main screen, so I need the current recordings removed from my main screen so how do I do that? It can display it after commercial skips and down converts it with 265 with MCe buddy. It just for curiosity, I have stopped the process of the MCE buddy and it has no effect on the issue I'm having with the server.

I have selected to use x cores from the CPU instead of the Nvidia.

But I have stopped at MC buddy just to make sure that it wasn't hogging CPU from emby and like I mentioned it had no effect.

At this point I'm still pointing towards emby not using CPU power even with I slept real time in task manager, and by used to spike up my CPU once in awhile but it don't do that no more, I'm not sure if it was the last update or the previous updates I'm not sure what's going on but it's not using CPU power like it should be. When I tried to load up the main screen for the first time using my Nvidia stream box it's always been snappy. But when this happens it won't even load the main screen or it takes long periods of time, and that causes people to press the back button and load again, which takes more tasks than what it should in the beginning because I don't think this problem should exist. So hopefully we can find out what it is here pretty soon. Oh and before I forget happy New Year to everybody 🙂

I found the record folder in the library settings and deleted that.  The server was starting to stick so bad that it was taking 20 seconds or longer just to load menus. After deleting that I have not seen the server Pause or stick.

However, when I go to the TV channel and play the channel directly I still get a menu that pops up that says play live version or play from the beginning. How do I get rid of that?

I'm now fearing that if somebody plays it from the beginning it will cause the server to stick.

Or maybe that function uses another code and does not have problems.. not sure but after dealing with it pausing and sticking I'm not too much into testing at the moment especially on New Year's Eve right before the ball drops. I've got a lot of people watching TV right now I'm just guessing but at least 10 plus and increasing.  Still no CPU spikes, nothing else seems to be surging except for the recording drive, it only spikes when the server sticks. But it's doing that trying to catch back up.

I guess I can monitor that and see if that is resolved and that'll give me a better idea.

I'll return with an update

I got rid of the long pauses, but now I got short pauses. I just gave up watching the football game. About everyone to 2 minutes it's a 5 to 15 second pause. In this time emby is unresponsive and 5% CPU used. :(

I can't find any drive sticking nothing is at 100% everything is barely being used.

I'm ready to try the beta at this point.

If you think that'll help tell me the, I don't want to do it and possibly get stuck on beta. I guess I can save my current setup before switching.

I'm almost ready to pull an old Shadow copy of my hard drive from when it was working right.

I will be grabbing the log file after midnight

It will be in the same location where you got the ffmpeg logs. The name of the file will start with embyserver

just thought i would let you know, this server has been updated for a very long time.

It started on android, then copied over to windows, then to linux, then had issues with rights to access external devices, then back to windows.

but that was prob 3 or 4 years ago. most of the old stuff should be gone by now. I think i also went beta back then and change back. lol

but its been running fine and used to use cpu and spike when things happened like guide or extreme tasks. i can not even see it in the cpu graph anymore. and I keep task mang runing 24.7
