Southernskmo 0 Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 I want a complete backup and have already pasted Emby files onto 2nd drive in original Nas . I thought I could start the new nas up (empty) and use migration assist or config bkup to copy the set up over to the new box. Then move one of the drives over to the new box. Now I see comments that the new box has to have a drive inside for the setup and will erase it. Is it possible for me to do this?
Bims0n 14 Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 (edited) Hello, up to my knowledgee this is not possible as the OS is not saved on a single drive only. Also you should head for the synology community forum for this question as this is not emby specific information that is needed here. You have questions regarding the setup / import of drives for DSM, therefore you may find better guidance over there. Edited December 16, 2025 by Bims0n 1
Southernskmo 0 Posted December 17, 2025 Author Posted December 17, 2025 I used an old tiny temp drive to boot the new box but did not make a volume with it. Did a manual install of matching dsm 7.2 on the new box. Then Shut down and removed the tiny drive moved the established drive over to the new box and Emby was up and running on the new box in a flash. Both boxes showed same users and groups and just needed to reinstall Emby on top of the old install on old box and getting ready to run the backup of it (made one with lib on each volume) that I made while I was saving up for the new box, (I hope)
