Too many problems with my LG and Philips TVs.

Recommended Posts

Posted

It started last summer when trailers stopped playing. I read that it was a cookie issue, but in my case, it's still the same. Trailers and movies, even those I've had saved for over 15 years, have stopped working.

Despite deleting everything, completely turning off the TVs, and reinstalling the app version 1.0.47, it's still the same.

The LG TVs are 2025 Oled, and the Philips is a 2023 Ambilight.

I have over 2,000 movies, TV series, etc., on the server. The strange thing is that the TV series work perfectly, but the movies, even some that worked a few months ago, no longer do.

It gives a "strange" error... The server is an old HP server with 128 GB of RAM, two Xeon processors, etc. It's a beast that I use as a NAS. The hard drives, with a total capacity of about 40 TB, are kept at temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius.

The strange thing is that, with other similar programs, movies play perfectly without errors.

I tried this program in September 2024; I liked it and paid for the subscription, but now I can't use it, or it only works for watching TV series. Movies don't work, neither in 480p nor in 4K; everything fails.

The error message says:

Playback error.

There are currently no compatible streams available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for more information.

It also appears, but only for a few seconds and then disappears:

Watch video on YouTube
Error 153
Video player configuration error.

Remembering the P2P era, I renamed the files I recently added in case there was a copyright issue. Even though I only use it on an intranet, the problem persists: it gives an error. And those same movies that won't play in Emby do play in other similar programs.

If I play them on the server, with any player, they work perfectly, but not with Emby.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar error?

Best regards.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Excuse me, nothing is logged in the Emby log, nor was a server transcoding log (ffmpeg log) generated during playback (in the server logs folder).

The log exists for other instances, but not when errors occurred while testing movies. What's the point of checking a log if it doesn't show the errors when they happen?

Or the answer is, "Looking at yesterday's log, we'll fix what happened to you today at noon." There's no log of anything while testing 20 different movies, all of which resulted in errors.

Regarding following the instructions to submit a report, I believe I've provided even more information than requested in that post.

However, if the information provided and the problem description aren't clear, I don't know how to report it to Emby or if I should simply email them, as I don't understand why the program stopped working just 9 months after I registered as a premium customer.

My experience with software over the last 35 years leads me to only two conclusions: the problem lies with Emby or the Emby app for LG and Philips.

Yes, on other similar systems (I prefer not to mention the various Emby-like apps), movies and trailers that don't work with Emby play correctly in those programs, so the problem isn't corrupted files.

Similarly, if you test file X, any file, in different formats and codecs, and none of them work, but the same files do work in other programs.

As I've read in other posts, you uninstall the TV app, turn it off completely by unplugging it, wait 10 minutes (it's not necessary, but I'll do exactly what you ask), restart everything on the TV, and reinstall Emby.

And the same problem persists. Therefore, in this case, it's not due to old cookies or a problem with the LG app update, version 1.0.47.

Or Emby itself has a problem. 🤔🤔

Best regards.

Is your issue specifically related to youtube trailers, or other movie playbacks as well?  There is a more permanent fix for youtube trailers in the next release.

If you have issues with regular movie playback, then we will need logs for the playback attempts to better understand the cause

The trailers stopped working around August; I don't remember exactly.

The serious problem is that I can't watch movies, and there's no record of these errors. The only message that appears on the TV screen is the one I posted earlier.

Using the Emby app on the TV doesn't generate any error logs on the server, but an error message appears on the screen, and the movie freezes.

Therefore, I can't fix it because there's no record of the problem.

If an error was logged in the Emby server log, I would have already looked up what it meant and how to fix it instead of resorting to other programs when trying to watch a movie.

Yesterday I did more testing, and by modifying the movie's name—for example, if the movie that wasn't working was called "The House," and I changed it to "The Houuuuse" then the movie worked. But this solution isn't compatible with all movies, only some. Now I have to check which codecs and formats the movies that can be played after renaming them use...

What version number of the Emby app is it?

Good evening, I posted it in the first comment.

Tomorrow I'll run some tests to see if the movies that still won't play, even after changing the title, display correctly in the TV series section. I'll try adding "S01" to the beginning of the title to see if that fixes it. TV series added in recent months or those from 2000 play without problems...

What I don't understand is why I can see them if I change the title. The title doesn't contain hexadecimal characters, only letters, but for the past few months, most of the movies haven't played. If I change the name, they play.

Whether I leave the name as is or change it, nothing specific is generated in the log, it doesn't record any errors when playing them or when they fail to play due to the error...

If I'm not attaching the log, it's not for any particular reason, simply attaching a log from 10 hours before or 10 hours after an "incident" doesn't clarify anything.

The movies can't be viewed even after renaming them, but I can play them directly on the server with VLC, Media Player, or any other program, and they play correctly.

If I run the movies on the Emby within the server, they don't produce any errors (they all play perfectly).

The graphics card installed in the server is more than adequate.

And with competing software, there are no errors.

Perhaps it could be a copyright issue blocking them, but a few months ago, everything played without problems.

It's a strange error. At first, I thought it was due to hard drive temperatures, but I've been monitoring them for three months, and the highest temperature they've reached is 42 degrees Celsius, and that was on the drive with the TV series installed. The movie folder only reached 35.

Maybe it's just happening to me because of the volume of files I have. I'm going to try separating them by year... right now I have the movies from 2024 and 2025 together in a single folder... But in the folders for previous years, some only have a few movies and they don't play, even though they did a few months ago.

Best regards.

It's not just about looking for an error in the log. It confirms how your library is setup and we can check the sequence of events to better understand how to help with troubleshooting.

If you can do some tests with debug logging on then that would be most helpful.  If you are getting the 'No compatibel streams error' and you're not getting any ffmpeg/transcode logs then that suggests other issues.  Can you please check that you have enabled all the trancoding options in the user settings on the server?

If these are youtube trailers, then yes that is due to changes from youtube. It has been resolved for the next update to the Emby LG app.

Look, I don't think you understand what I'm writing, because the answers don't make sense to me.

If the server was configured between September 2024, everything worked correctly and "NEVER" generated errors when watching a movie, and since August 2025, 90% of the movies can't be viewed.

Are you telling me that, without modifying the Emby server configuration I made in September 2024, this configuration changes on its own and that's why it's not working now?

If Emby can change my configuration with an update, it's not the program I want.

I've attached a screenshot of the error, and, I repeat, there are no log entries when these errors occur. If there's no log entry for the error, there's not much that can be done. And it can't be that, after using a configuration for almost a year without errors, it suddenly stops working. Nobody has access to my server. And I haven't modified Emby or added/removed any plugins since at least March 2025.

It's possible that Emby is modifying itself... But I've been using Plex since 2010 and the configuration remains the same. It has added things, obviously, but my server configuration hasn't changed.

Luke, the trailers don't bother me. I've already read that it's a problem with the LG update.

The problem is that many movies aren't working, but a few months ago, those same movies worked perfectly.

Whether it's movies from the last century or movies from 2025, I can't find a pattern to understand why they stop working. And I also can't find a pattern to understand why some movies with identical formats, identical audio and video codecs—identical in every way—work while others don't.

Unfortunately, I fully understand the problems that arise when programming certain software.

I've been dealing with movie codecs for over 30 years, so I have some experience. Obviously, I don't know, nor do I want to know, the inner workings of Emby. I already have enough problems.

I'll just mention that the error I'm getting is a bit unusual, perhaps due to my usage or the amount of data on my server.

The fact that you've never encountered anything similar is what usually happens when I can't fix it.

Don't worry, I'll run more tests and post the results.

For now, it's curious that renaming the movies makes them work again. That's never happened to me before; it's always been a problem with codecs or corrupted files, even bad sectors on the hard drives, but renaming them has never fixed it.

Luke,

If anything had been logged in the Emby log (an error, a line pointing to a library), I would have already checked it.

The problem is that it doesn't log any errors, as if that message never appeared on the TV or as if the server were waiting to be used.

No events have been logged during the time I've been testing with different movies with display errors. Nothing is logged.

When you debug a program looking for errors, it generates them, but if you debug it and it doesn't log anything, are you telling me that by reviewing it you can figure out how to fix it?

For example: if I leave the server running, but it doesn't display anything, the patterns logged are always the same. If I run tests, I think it was on Saturday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. I get the same result in the log as if I weren't accessing any movies or series on the different TVs.

The server acts as if nobody is trying to play a movie.

There is no record of errors caused by the LG app on the TV.

I'll continue testing, and if I manage to log anything, I'll let you know.

For now, I don't know why, but some movies play normally if their names are changed.

Changing the name doesn't generate any errors in the log, it shows that the movie is playing normally, exactly like a movie that is working.

Best regards.

You say this, but you are reluctant to provide us with logs so that we can assist.  It's not just about looking for errors.  Helping us to understand what is not in the log is equally important

SamES,

Sharing the server log isn't feasible for me.

I'll find a way to fix the error when watching movies myself.

Is there anywhere on the Emby website to download Emby updates prior to July/August 2025?

The last update I see is Stable: v4.9.1.90 (2025/11/11).

If you could help me by providing an update prior to July/August, which is when my problems started, that would be great.

And sorry if I've bothered you.

Why can't you share logs via PM from your own server installed on your own hardware?

What limitations are you faceing.

It's not that I can't, it's that I don't want to.

I think it's fine for people to share their logs, but I don't think it's right to share my IPs. Perhaps using a variable would be more appropriate, but since I've been using the same IP for, I don't remember exactly, 15 or 20 years, I prefer that it not appear anywhere. And I also share how I have my hard drives organized... I don't think it's right to divulge that information.

Even if I send my IP privately to either of the two people who replied, I don't know them at all. I'm sorry, but I don't think it's right to share that data.

If it's the only way to solve the problem and I can't find the solution without your help, I'll continue using other programs, like Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi...

I only paid $110 or $120, perhaps it was a bit excessive for 9 months of use, but I don't see any other way out.

Everyone has their quirks, and I don't want to share any information about my server and its contents.

I charge a good amount of money to maintain what's on it, and of course, I use it to keep my video library.

I appreciate the help, but if the only solution is to share the registry, that's not feasible for me.

HI, you can also send log files over private message to me.

For what its worth, I have the same issue at the moment, it's not affecting all LG TVs (We have 4 that we use at home)

All TVs are running Emby for LG 1.0.47, three of the TVs are absolutely fine playing any format with zero issues, one of them categorically will no longer work with any media (Music, TV shows or movies)

Nothing too unusual is showing up in the logs and I know it's not a server issue, the TV for whatever reason has just decided to throw its toys out of the pram, I've even reset the TV, signed out of the app, deleted it and re-installed it but el zilcho

Surprise! If I move the movies that are giving errors directly to a folder in the TV series section, they play without any problems.

Note: I only tried moving 1 terabyte. I haven't tried it with 3 or 4... And it worked perfectly, not a single error. And those same movies in the movies section, ALL of them without exception, give errors.

I've tried about 100 or so, very old movies from the last century and from 2025... All with the same error.

It's funny, if I add more letters or numbers to the title, all of them, without exception, play again.

And if I move them to any folder in the TV series, the same thing happens; I don't need to change the name and they play perfectly.

Therefore, it's not the server configuration; it's the application LG is using.

Or perhaps the type of LG TVs, are OLED models from 2025.

Try changing the name; for example, if the movie is called "Blade," rename it to "Blaaaade."

If I change the name, they play perfectly.

The TV series aren't giving me any errors at the moment.

And if I add a folder called "movies" inside one of the TV series folders and put the movies that aren't working inside it, they start working again.

OK then maybe try refreshing metadata on an existing title, and then see if you can play after that.

Luke, in short, is a bit strange, but it's the LG app, because it doesn't change anything in the Emby registry. It's as if it's completely independent of the Emby system. It could be something specific to LG TVs...

I need to do more testing...

But I'm setting up a home theater and I have very little free time to test with Emby.

For now, if you rename them, it works.
If you move them to any folder in the TV series section, it also works without renaming them.

Regarding renaming, I think it's a copyright issue, because using movie titles that will be released in 2026 gives me the same error.

If, for example, I rename "Blade" to "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," it still blocks it. But if the title is, for example, "Spider-Man: Brand BAD Day," then it can be viewed without any problem.

And nobody accesses Emby from outside their home. I have friends who do use it, but since this happened to me in August, I've blocked them all.

8 hours ago, Luke said:

Noted, but I think I already tried that...

I keep a log of the server tests to note what works and what doesn't.

I'll run tests on the 24th and 25th, which I expect will be quiet days...
