why did episode not record?

Recommended Posts

Hi as far as I can tell from the log I think it did record. What makes you think that it didn’t?

Posted

Because there was no video file.  Can you tell what episode it was?

Posted

Well assuming that was the only recording at 8pm:

2025-12-10 20:00:04.156 Info LiveTV: Will record to D:\media\TV_series\Everybody Loves Raymond (1996)\Season 5\Everybody Loves Raymond S05E01 Italy.ts for 29.930724111666667 minutes.

Luke, there were 2 episodes scheduled, see the pic. Do you see 2 recordings?  The one you list is the 1 of the 2 that did in fact record.

OK but that is the one you circled, and you specifically said the first one did not record. So what time was the one that did not record? What was the season and episode number?

Posted

Okay, if 20:00:04.156 indicates the start of the recording, then I must have gotten the 2 mixed up.  What I do know is one of them did not record.

How is the series configured?

OK. More logging will be needed to get to the bottom of this.

One thing that got added recently at the suggestion of @sa2000is right when the recording timer fires we check the episodes in the library again and then skip the recording if should be skipped based on the series recording options.

This way if you added an episode between the last guide refresh and the recording taking place, the setting would still work. I'm not sure that's the reason though because when it happens it will get logged, and I don't see that in your log. So we'll just have to sweep through it and make sure that all of the possible conditions that could cause a recording to be skipped are logged.

Would it be useful to show the episode info in these future-fire entries?  This way you'd know what episode is expected to record which could help in debug/understanding any failure.  (or at least it might help me😉)

Yes that's another thing I'm doing is adding more info to those log lines.

There are a couple of aspects to this that need to be looked into

1. How we handle back to back recordings - We closed the live TV stream at 20:30 as the 20:00 episode completed at same time as the trigger fired for the 20:30 recording. I just need to double check that is normal

2. Both airings had the same episode title as the episode was in 2 parts - being S05 E01 and S05 E02 with same title "Italy" for both. I need to look into if the title plays a part in establishing if already in the library. The episodes are both named Italy but identified in the guide metadata as being in 2 parts and there are two different internal identifiers.

These were the 2 fired timers

When the timer fired for the 2nd episode, we were closing the stream because of the  completion of the first - i do not know if this was a factor

Managed to reproduce the problem. Suspect it was because both episodes were named the same "Italy"

Diagnostics referred to the development team

Thanks @sa2000 you are awesome!

The episode matching by name is already restricting to same season only.

There's no real way to avoid this other than unchecking the box about don't record episodes already in the library.

@LukeI don't understand what you are saying.  Both episodes are in the same season. Why not match by episode only?  It is only the episode that matters, I'd think.

Does the guide data have an episode number?

I'm asking you what the guide data has. But that's not the Italy episode. Probably too late to tell now though.

It is not too late for getting the data from Gracenote for the 10th December . The Guide had this data

    "startTime": "2025-12-11T02:00Z",
    "endTime": "2025-12-11T02:30Z",
    "duration": 30,

    "partNum": {
      "part": 1,
      "totalParts": 2
    },
      "episodeTitle": "Italy",
      "releaseYear": 2000,
      "releaseDate": "2000-10-02",
      "origAirDate": "2000-10-02",
      "episodeNum": 1,
      "seasonNum": 5,

and

    "startTime": "2025-12-11T02:30Z",
    "endTime": "2025-12-11T03:00Z",
    "duration": 30,

    "partNum": {
      "part": 2,
      "totalParts": 2
    },

      "episodeTitle": "Italy",
      "releaseYear": 2000,
      "releaseDate": "2000-10-02",
      "origAirDate": "2000-10-02",
      "episodeNum": 2,
      "seasonNum": 5,

This data for the 10th December US local time (11th UTC) has not yet been purged by Gracenote

FWIW, this is common on old sitcoms you probably don't need old guide data just a rerun channel.  Sometimes the subtitle doesn't match like "EP005927330094" followed by "EP005927330095" if you search by TMS ID, most times they do.

New info:  The recorded program is labelled as 'part 2' but is actually 'part 1' episode.

Which program/airing ? What date/time recorded?

In my test where I used the 10th December guide data, the first episode was recorded as

image.png

and displayed title:

image.png

and the second airing did not record

Well, I was going by what I thought I saw on the Android TV app when we played it last night - I thought it said part 2.  Looking at it now it says part 1 and it looks like it is part 1.  So no issue, sorry for the confusion.
