OPUS audio in music library problem

I don't use transcoding. I run emby in a docker container on a Proxmox server and the hardware isn't up to job. Old AMD Phenom processor. It has served up 1080p, 4k, and music wonderfully to my various Roku TVs however since it is purely a bandwidth issue. I like the Roku interface. I like Emby server. With that said.

If I take any opus audio in any container webm, opus, mkv, etc it plays on my Roku TVs (Bought within the last couple years) from a USB stick. My TVs can play opus files directly without issue in various containers. The TV is directly playing content so obviously no conversion/transcoding.

If I take my opus audio embedded in a webm container and put it on my Emby server in any content folder other than music it plays without transcoding.

If I take my opus audio files and put them in an OGG container with "opus" or "ogg" extension and add it to Emby in a music folder I get "malformed data" when attempting to play them on my Roku TVs. Same files will play off of USB stick on my Roku TVs without issue. If I use my computer's Web browsers (Windows 11, Debian Trixie - Firefox) the audio plays fine without transcoding. 

ACC audio files play fine from Emby on my Roku TVs via the Emby app but I want to standardize my music and move everything from my old MP3 files (224kbps) to OPUS. I want to get everything up to a modern standard with some improved audio quality for any new music I add and forget about it for another 20 years.

 

How can I get the Emby client app on my Roku TVs to get the Emby server to play an opus audio file (in music library) without giving me a "malformed data" error?

I had just finished playing Midnight Sky via the web interface and it had started playing another song when I stopped it. Then I tried to play the same song via the Roku Emby app and got malformed data. The filename is "Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky.opus"

@apollumiThank you for your bug report. I think newer Roku firmware may have changed things in regards to OPUS. I have added this to our issue tracker so it gets more immediate attention. It should play regardless of direct or transcode. It should never throw the malformed data message. Every item should be playable with one exception that it should only throw this error when media is purposely packaged into the wrong containers. All the codecs you mention are in the correct containers. Apologies this is an issue. We will investigate.

I started tackling Opus because I was testing video formats and noticed VP9+Opus played fine as a video without transcoding. I have "Allow changing of container formats, if necessary, during media playback" set in Emby but transcoding is turned off due to hardware limitations.

I typically convert audio files via VLC. I have also used yt-dlp to download and extract the opus audio "-x" from a video as part of this testing. Neither method works for Emby Server + Roku Emby client. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the Roku Emby client. I was also trying to find some way to trick Emby into sending it via a webm file (as an audio file) to the Roku Emby client. Not a good solution I know but it could be undone at a later date.

Everything was off originally (video-audio transcoding and container change) and I was getting "malformed data". First thing I mentioned was that I don't use transcoding. After doing some reading (prior to posting here) I turned container change on to see if it made a difference, it didn't. After an additional couple days of delving deeper into the issue and trying different things I came here to ask. I just turned everything off again and still have "malformed data".

Do I have to have transcoding on for it to work? Am I unlucky? Do I need a different streaming device?

I recently went from an Onkyo 7.2 AV Receiver (2014) to a Denon 7.2 AV Receiver. Hello ATMOS. The sound was surprisingly good from the Denon. This got me looking into upgrading my music files.

Hi.  That is because you are trying to force the device to play a format it cannot.

For that particular format to work on that particular device, yes.

I wouldn't recommend converting your whole library to opus. It is one of those formats that a lot of devices claim to support, but then they just don't end up playing it very well. Maybe the way users are encoding them is just not in line with what they are developing for.
