Verizon Fios killing my CableCard: Options? Ideas?

Recommended Posts

So I just received an email from Verizon stating that I need to change equipment because my CableCard is no longer supported.  Yes, I'm still using a CableCard with the HD Homerun Prime.  It has worked great for years and Live (local) TV is a must.  Now they want to send me some "digital adapter" which just has coax connections an no way to hook it to my home network to continue using Emby as my complete home system.  Below is what I was sent.  I would appreciate real ideas and suggestions.  I like the way my system works currently and I don't really want to change.

Oh no, that's not good. I'm in the same situation, but haven't gotten the notice yet. I'm interested in what others have as options.

Yea... I'm not interested in multiple streaming services or jumping through a bunch of hoops.  I want my Fios Live TV in Emby where the DVR works great and everything is nice and organized.

Agree. I've tried the channels dvr and streaming before and it just didn't work as well. If I have to switch from the cable card I'll probably use PlayOn for recording and some streaming for live local channels.

I went through this about a year and a half ago when Spectrum wouldn’t renew my deeply discounted cable TV subscription with CableCARD at a reasonable price.

I then canceled the cable TV service with them and went with YouTubeTV, which is a much better service although now it cost about the same as cable TV did but it’s still a little bit less.

I did try ChannelsDVR for a while and it worked OK but I just figured one app for all is just never gonna happen so I only use YouTubeTV for live TV now

nearly $100 a month for YTTV is absolutely not going to happen.  That is an absolute ridiculous amount of money.  I'm still paying half of that for Fios

I was paying a lot less but then I wasn't.. Spectrum doesn't have Google TV app to this day so I cannot even get their streaming product.

Sparklight in my region is also dropping traditional cable service.   It looks like they are skipping any form of 'receiver/tuner' and just pushing apps or browser.

Of course their staff has no technical specs.  The optimist in me thinks I could add a plugin to fHDHR, but then I think about how I only really watch the local news, which isn't local, and I don't really watch but have it on for white noise, the effort would not be worth it unless I was super bored.

I came out of the lurking shadows to join and follow this thread... im in the same fios tv/hdhr prime w cc boat as some of you.

NOT looking for a major change just hoping i could put this new "ip box" somehow into an iptv service or otherwise feed it back into emby for "dvr" and maybe via whatever shield app (been using the hd homerun app for those boxes in 4 rooms) for live tv/sports...  not happy with this news and the likelyhood of dropping live tv altogether and maybe doing an antenna for as many of the nfl games as i can get seems to be increasing....

HOPING someone here has a good option they figure out and can share w the group!

If you got the same email then fios is more or less not being honest about the "ip" thing. The tuner they reference has coax in and coax out. There is no network connections. I thought maybe they have some new device and just used an image of that they were using, but that device is the only one I can find on the Verizon site. Which tells me I'm screwed.

yup same email.. you could be right or it could be a moca based something this is "ip tv" at some level although i agree w your pt that its not the same as we're getting with a network tuner like the HDHR... I think i'm going to ignore the email a bit and see what happens... see what other solutions are posted here like this channels app thing.. read up again on aerial antennas for the main couple of channels i would truly miss..

for my area I would need an aboveground outdoor antenna.  Which means buying one and then having someone install it just for the local channels.  Then have to pay a provider for the rest of the cable channels.  The channels app thing is intriguing but that would mean another cost on top of what I am already paying for cable.

I'm with you.  If I ignore and don't contact Fios then maybe they'll forget about me.  This is the rear of the adapter Fios put in the email.  I did a search of the Fios site and was unable to find anything else.  Doesn't mean they don't, but I'm not holding out hope.

Same thing here with Verizon I returned all of their equipment with CableCard unhooked my HDhomerun waited for the other internet company to get cheaper internet and now use IPTV for less than even half of what I was paying before but now with more channels. They did me a favor by saving me money and all I needed to do was google on how to make an m3u file into a normal size to use on my Emby and it works really good.

Can you share what IPTV service you're using and the steps you used to make the m3u?

Yes, I downloaded the IPTV m3u to my computer desktop then went through it and picked out each channel I wanted and copy & pasted the channels I wanted to an empty text folder. At the very top of the empty text folder you need to add this #EXTM3U and below that just paste all the channels you would like to see on your Emby server. I will pm you if I decide to let you know what IPTV service I use there are quite a few to choose from.

You should always use a vpn and a Vlan for all smart devices that are connecting to Emby server is what I do, Emby server and smart devices all on 1 Vlan. Everything else on my network has it's own Vlan, each cell phone each tablet each everything has it's own Vlan. I run 3 vpns each different on 3 different routers each with there own switch for Vlans.

I loved my HDhomerun setup with my CableCard but greedy Cable & Internet providers forced my hand. Now I'm saving $140 a month and I can afford to eat steak again.

@jcbeaver76

Could it be that you misunderstand them?

The DCT700 "Digital Adapter" it more than 20 years old (the Motorola manual indicates a date of 2003) and it rather seems to me that they are telling you that both - Cable Card and the "Digital Adapter" - will stop working...?!

It's possible, but that is what is pictured in their email and the only thing listed on the Fios website

Well, assuming that you posted a screenshot of the e-mail, they pictured the "digital adapter" and a CableCard, alongside:

Where exactly?

They might forget about you, but they will stop the broadcast that can be decoded via CC at some point.

It will be interesting to see which actual equipment they are going to give you..

You know what, I completely missed that.  OK, then I guess i'll actually have to call and maybe I can get more info.  None the less, I doubt whatever is sent will work with Emby natively.

So I just called Verizon and their solution is to send me a set top box. Basically going back to the old days.

They interesting part is which standard they are using and whether there's a card and a module, etc.
