nospotify 184 Posted November 11, 2025 Posted November 11, 2025 (edited) Did the latest Emby self-update delete previous server files/location!? I saw Emby notification that it was autoupdating to 4.9.1.90, and then all of a sudden C:\Users\{me}\AppData\Roaming\Emby\emby.exe doesn't exist, and there's no longer an Emby app anywhere on my system! The only available log files are attached. EMBY IS GONE from my system! Please help! embyserver-63898466684.txt updater-2c499ae5f81640e4b60aa8e4c35f3801.log hardware_detection-63898463244.txt embyserver-63898463192.txt embyserver-63898466027.txt embyserver-63898465954.txt Edited November 11, 2025 by nospotify Added screenshots
nospotify 184 Posted November 11, 2025 Author Posted November 11, 2025 Emby is gone from my start menu and every other prior launch location. Now I find that the server files - /programdata/ and/system/ - seem to have been created on my desktop, and when I start Emby it prompts me to start installing from scratch. I don't want to do that if there is something broken that I can fix and return to my prior configuration/settings. What's going on? How can this be fixed?
Luke 42077 Posted November 12, 2025 Posted November 12, 2025 Hi, the updater does not remove the application as part of the process. You may have had some anti-virus or security software falsely quarantine emby server and remove it. Can you look into that? If you cant' find anything then I would suggest installing from the website on top of your existing version.
nospotify 184 Posted November 12, 2025 Author Posted November 12, 2025 Absolutely nothing has changed on my computer's security settings or software. For some reason Emby installed the latest version on my desktop, and the former .exe file (along with many others) and the "-old" subdirectory were deleted. Did you review the logs I provided?
nospotify 184 Posted November 12, 2025 Author Posted November 12, 2025 (edited) I manually copied all of the new program files created on my desktop over to the prior location (C:\Users\{me}\AppData\Roaming\Emby\) and Emby is now running again. But why were all those earlier files deleted?! And how do I not have this happen the next time Emby updates the server? Edited November 12, 2025 by nospotify

The only time we've seen this reported before is what I said earlier: Quote You may have had some anti-virus or security software falsely quarantine emby server and remove it. Can you look into that?

I don't know how to interpret them in detail, but the updater log reports an error.

Is there something nonstandard about your original installation?

Is there something nonstandard about your original installation? Nope, literally nothing has changed on that server machine in months, since before the automatic upgrade from 4.8 to 4.9, other than install and restart for that new community-contributed Smart Playlist plugin. Maybe the two restarts collided? Anyway, seems nothing more to be done. Will see if next Emby auto-update goes ok.
Luke 42077 Posted November 13, 2025 Posted November 13, 2025 OK let’s keep an eye on it for the next update. Thanks. 1
