Emby not using internal default subtitles, but instead downloading new (incorrect) ones

I believe Emby is always downloading fresh subtitles for shows. Which is generally fine. But some entire series never match up, while the internal subtitles work fine. Problem is, no matter what settings I change it will still download subtitles.

I have the setting to skip if the video already contains subtitles matching the preferred language, which is english. Attached is I think all the relevant settings for this.

I checked in Tiny Media Manager and the only internal default subtitles weren't set to English. So I set to English, deleted the .srt that Emby downloaded, and rescanned library files. And it just keeps downloading the .srt and setting that as the default.

I've tried 10 different ways. Am I missing something obvious? I just want to use the embedded ones because it never manages to find correct ones on its own. I gave up on Plex ages ago because the subtitle system barely functioned, but I feel like Emby has gotten worse at it over time 😕

How did you do that?

@GrimReaper there is an edit option for subtitles where you can pick the language, default, forced, ect.

For this specific example I am using It's Always Sunny Season 12 Episode 8. You can see the TinyMediaManager pic of it in the OP. As well as my Emby subtitle settings.

I went and deleted the .srt that Emby downloaded, image attached.

Then under that specific episode in Emby, I went to options -> Refresh Metadata -> Replace All. Which leads to that .srt being created again.

Second screenshot shows what is in my subtitle drop down. It always defaults to English (SRT) which is the one that was downloaded.

Maybe setting the embedded subtitles to English in TinyMediaManager isn't actually doing what Emby is looking for. Because I'd assume the Emby setting wasn't working originally because they did not have a language marked. But even marking the embedded language as english doesn't seem to work.

Log is attached. I did try running the episode with the downloaded subtitles after deleting the .srt which causes an error. If you happen to see those in the log.

There's no language tag set on the subrip track so that's why this is happening. So I think the first step is getting that set right.

Does TMM actually update the source video file with that info? I didn't know it had that feature. Maybe it just writes it to the nfo?

That's why I asked you. That had only changed language tag in TMM db, it doesn't append file header.

It doesn't.

Yes. That was my initial suspicion, hence the original question.

@JGelps, your embedded subs have no language tag, hence Emby is unaware there's your preferred language subtitles available and downloads them as per your settings.

You'll need to edit those files with the tool of your choice (like this one) and tag your subtitles track accordingly.

Shame TMM doesn't change the file then. I do have it writing nfo files in the format for Emby. But I guess that isn't enough.

I'll try that tool. And I'm guessing according to other media I have it should end up saying 'English (SUBRIP)'. Never paid close enough attention to what they were named in the drop down.

Will report back if it works.

You guys are awesome thanks so much!

Right Emby probes the file directly for  media info. It does not get that data from the nfo file.
