From Plex to Emby

Hi,

I was looking for a good replacement for PLEX and found EMBY.

After using PLEX since the first year it was released I decided that I don't like what PLEX has become and its not possible to use it offline anymore.

I installed EMBY on linux vm and used my nfs server as a source for Movies/TV shows, just as I use it normally with PLEX.

Everything is working very good , I had to make minor change to run the service with another account and this is all working fine.

My only small issues which I wanted to ask if its possible to disable this "features".

I do not need any users/profiles on this media server, I understand the advantages for people who needs this option, to me it's completely useless.

The option to "remember me" is available which is fine, but because there are users/profiles I see the metadata manager which I DON'T WANT TO SEE OR USE this way.

Is there a tweak to remove it ? I will not create users or deal with profiles/privileges , it has to be as simple as possible. I have everything automatically configured at home

(Raddar/Bazzar/Sonnar etc...) I just want to go to the living room open the TV and run EMBY , no profiles no smart staff , play and done.

Thanks in advanced.

Yep, this is the way.  I have a profile called "Home" that I use for this purpose.  The "admin" account is only used for managing the server, etc.

Hi,

I created a new user (copy from existing user emby which is admin?)

Than removed Allow this user to manage the server  from emby user, but nothing has changed , the new user Doesn't have the metadata manager and the emby still see it.

what I have done wrong(this is exactly what I don't want to deal with), I only watch movies/tv shows, no small children or remotely access the server  and no NASA requirements  ?

Please allow to have the option not to use profiles at all , KEEP IT SIMPLE , but I guess there is no such thing in 2025 , if we can write additional code lets go for it. Do you all need it ? who cares.

My apologies for the nagging , 25y in IT , I never hated it more.

I'm having hard time understanding this: where does new user not have Metadata Manager? Where does Emby see it?

That is not feasible, Emby is multi-user environment, there will always be at least a single user (which by default will be a server admin, as you cannot have no server admins in any scenario), unrestricted number of non-admin users can be created in addition.

I guess its not a big deal and the metadata manager can stay there. I anyway manage all the library using sonarr/radarr

If you see that, means user is an admin - sorry for basic question, but did you click "Save" at the bottom of user settings after:

Yes I did but it runs forever and no accepting the change, I guess its like cutting the tree I am standing on.

its fine , let it stay this way , I don't want to spend time on this anymore.

Likely because you're trying to do it logged-in as that same user - try logging-in as your other/original user and then edit new user, untick "Allow this user to manage server" and it should catch.

The second user was not admin although when created I choose to copy from the admin user.

After  I checked the Allow this user to manage the server it was allowing this user to remove the permissions to the emby user

Problem solved.

Its working but this is not what I wanted , I wanted only one settings , now every user has its own environment. And if the user from the TV needs to change something I need to set him as admin again in order to allow this account to modify something ? whats the point here really ?

Posted

No, you would log in as the admin user instead. Letting your normal user only accessing things needed in day to day use.

OK, basic things like subtitles which I need sometimes are available without admin rights

Yes, from the admin account you can give your usual account the right to download and/or delete subtitles

Its there but I still get an error when searching for subs(the plugin is installed and configured user/password).

Solved.

only if you move the mouse over the sign up you can see its opensubs.com and not .org, I used the .org creds

how about writing it in the plugin ? or add a test button ?

HI, ,thanks for following up, and yes that is a good idea.

It says .com already on the plugin configuration page where you enter your credentials.

But I agree that a test button would be a good idea.

Sorry ,I don't see it here , honestly I didn't know that there is a .com anyway

Interesting, maybe it's because I'm still on the 4.8 server but I do see the same as you on my 4.9 beta server. I'm surprised that it's different based on the server version but I guess it's possible, the plugin is 1.0.66 which is the latest I see for both. Sorry for the confusion.
