krypticnexus 1 Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Hi everybody I am trying to figure out what the most equivalent settings are in handbrake to approximate emby conversion stuff. I'm doing this because I want to do an a to b testing between the eight or nine video cards I have just to see which cards perform the best and if it's worth spending $100 versus 30. I know I can look at the logs and see the ffmpeg output but I don't know how to make that output into settings in handbrake. Thanks

Luke 42077 Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Hi, I don't know about the best way to simulate but you might also be ok with just handbrake defaults.
krypticnexus 1 Posted October 14, 2025 Author Posted October 14, 2025 Yeah I was just wanting to use the default settings that emby does to get a better idea of how it may perform because with the default 1080 or 2160 I get half of the frames per second vs what I get when emby is encoding the video. 1
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Just a little note to add a suggestion. Do not worry too much about audio settings as transcoding audio is not very intensive and most Emby setups do not even hiccup when just transcoding audio. Also I have used the built in Emby conversion tool and it does a good job for me. One note about that is that I am not particularly picky about either video or audio and many of the things I do might be unacceptable to the more picky. So test and see if it works well for you before using conversion. I usually use the setting where Emby replaces the original file rather that the "along side" option. Also the Emby conversion has many resolution settings and I usually use one of the lower ones and conversions are very fast for me, much faster than Handbrake, I actually have no idea how good or fast the higher resolution conversions are.
krypticnexus 1 Posted October 14, 2025 Author Posted October 14, 2025 Yeah I agree the settings I use are original quality TV and h265. I'm just trying to figure out what ffmpeg settings emby uses and how I can equate those settings into handbrake. I'm not doing it because I'm trying to manually convert files outside of emby. I am trying to set up test parameters so I can benchmark a dozen gpus so if somebody comes across my forum post of these benchmarks it will be closer to what they could see while using emby.
