HDHomeRun in Australia

Hi All

Just wondering if there are any Aussies (happy to hear from US users too, I was interested how well it tuned to Aussie free to air) here that are using an HDHomeRun with their Emby setup?

Specifically the HDHomeRun FLEX QUATRO (4 tuner DVB-T/T2/C) model (but any other model too)

I am currently using 4 x PCI Hauppage tuners configured via Windows Media Center (from the EPG123 guy) and then using ServerWMC and it's plug in.

I'd like something a bit more robust and want to be able to stop using WMC which I've now got installed on Win11.

So, if yes, what are your experiences ? Recording multiple channels simultaneously etc and general reliability of watching Live TV with Emby

Buying a HDHomeRun is a reasonably costly exercise (from US to AU) and I'd like to know what to expect before purchasing one and then find out it's not up to scratch.

Appreciate anyone's insights and experiences.

I have the Flex and DVB-T but I am in Canada so only test using a modulator and DVB-T/C work as well as any standalone HDHR devices so based on my ATSC experience I would expect they would by good Emby devices. I have never found a Silicondust tuner that was better than a Hauppauge tuner though.  I did buy mine refurbished from SD to save some money.

When you say "more robust" what do you mean?  I don''t know why you didn't try Emby's Hauppauge support or possible using NextPVR as your tuner plugin until Emby TV Next is available and production ready.  Typically my experience is people still using WMC don't really are resistant to change after all these years.

When you say multiple channels simultaneously, if you need more than 4 shows and want to record more than one channel on the same mux the question is a bit more complicated.

You guys are stuck in the past I don't know why anyone uses HDhomeruns in 2025 unless you flash them and use port 49152 as it's the only one the script allows you to use as it's UNhackable to modify. If you have the script you can turn your HDhomerun into an m3u server remotely connect even but other than even that I wouldn't use Homeruns they more like a foul ball not homerun.

Now that I think of it for local channels it would be good but for cable tv naH. There is a guy on here that has the script I can't remember his name, cheers.

@emveepee Hey, basically I'm trying to minimise the software required, as The HDHomeRuns are natively supported by Emby and do not need any ancillary programs to run I thought that might be the best way forward. I don't have WinTV for Hauppage, although it is cheap. NextPVR is a whole complete package and needs an Emby plugin.

The reason WMC is still in the mix is that the machine I'm specifically talking about is actually for my elderly parents, WMC is/was actually great for liveTV and recording, shame it got killed off. So that's why it's in the mix. The WMC package as a standalone install can have some problems, so reliability is what I'm after.

By mulitple channels, I just mean being able to simulteously record 1-4 shows at the same time, not messing with multiple on 1 mux.

@ObfuscatedThis is only for Free to Air TV, nothing cable related.  I have no idea what you're talking about re scripts. Just after a simple solution for Live TV and being able to record multiple shows at the same time with the least amount of fuss.

I've used a HDHomeRun CONNECT (2-tuner) in Melbourne for about 8 years with no real issues.  Works fine for broadcast TV and I have recordings scheduled most days. I use the Emby conversion function to automatically convert them to mkv files as it improves playback and can reduce the size if they are recordings that you want to keep.

I don't use the tuner for watching LiveTV, mostly as I just don't have a need to and channel changes are not as quick as the TV.  Just keep in mind that you will need your own TV Guide service as the built in guide provider doesn't cover Australia.  IceTV is about $4/month and is very reliable and accurate.

Once you get it working it's pretty much set and forget.
