quiet_blueberry 1 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 Hello, I recently got a new TV (LG65C5) and bought the NVIDIA Shield Pro TV 2019 for that. Because the TV does a much better job at upscaling than all the Shield options I enabled "Match video resolution" and "Enable display refresh rate switching" in the Emby Android app. But when playing 1080p content the app sometimes crashes (I guess around 30-40% of the time) when starting to play. I searched in the internet and tried some things, including disabling HDMI-CEC, turning off "Match content color space", switching the HDMI from 1 to 2 (which is the eARC/ARC thing) and also disabling "Enable display refresh rate switching" to only have the "Match video resolution" enabled but none of that worked. Interesting thing is that I also got smarttube installed and also enabled the matching there and that works without any crashes with 1080p content (I confirmed in the settings that smarttube did indeed switch the resolution when playing, but no crashes occured). I've enabled the debug logging and let it crash, I've attached it the file. Do other people also have this issue or this is a known issue? emby_android_1760051283131.txt

If your TV is better at upscaling than the Shield, wouldn't you want to turn that option off...?
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 Hello, thanks for answering. As far as I understood it, it works like this (please correct me if I'm wrong): The TV can play 4k, the Shield is also set to 4k output. When playing 1080p content in emby, the shield upscales it so it can send the 4k signal via HDMI to the TV. If the shield is set to 1080p then 1080p is sent to the TV via HDMI and the TV handles the rest. The "Match video resolution" in emby does nothing more than changing the resolution output setting of the shield to the resolution thats playing. I'm pretty sure it works like this because I can see the shields upscaling say something like "Active: No (No upscaling needed)" when emby set it to 1080p and just sends this to the TV. When the "Match video resolution" function in emby is off then the upscaling of the shield says it's active and it results in a worse quality in the end. I hope this explains the issue better. 1
ebr 16169 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 Yep, you are correct. Sorry for the confusion.
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted October 11, 2025 Author Posted October 11, 2025 Hey, any updates so far? Is this a known issue?
Luke 42077 Posted October 25, 2025 Posted October 25, 2025 Hi, can you please try Emby for Android 3.5.13 and see if that helps: Thanks.
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted October 26, 2025 Author Posted October 26, 2025 Hello, I downloaded the arm64 version from the website and installed it on the shield. I can confirm that the version in the emby app is showing 3.5.13. Sadly, the crash is still occuring. I had debug logging enabled and attached the log file. I also attached the media info that I tried to play. I hope it helps. emby_android_1761485240675.txt
Luke 42077 Posted November 4, 2025 Posted November 4, 2025 Hi, can you please try Emby for Android 3.5.16 and see if that helps: Thanks.
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted November 4, 2025 Author Posted November 4, 2025 (edited) Hi, I tested the new version. It got better and crashes less often but I'm still able to let it crash. I use the same episode as before. To test it I play the episode and when it plays successfully for a few seconds I exit the player and play it again. Idk if that may affects it and is unusual behaviour? Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to test it. I've attached the log as always. Also another little thing: I also noticed while testing that the resolution and frame rate switches back to 4k 60hz when going to the next episode directly from the player, which means I have to exit the player and click play on the next episode for it to work again. emby_android_1762290793979.txt Edited November 4, 2025 by quiet_blueberry
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted November 4, 2025 Author Posted November 4, 2025 When I play the episode there is a chance that it loads for 1 second or so and then I end up at the home screen. The emby app just disappears/exists/crashes without a message or somewhat else.
Luke 42077 Posted November 13, 2025 Posted November 13, 2025 @quiet_blueberryare you still seeing this with Emby for Android 3.5.16 ?
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted November 13, 2025 Author Posted November 13, 2025 Yes, you can also verify this by looking into the log file that I attached: Tue Nov 04 22:13:22.829 GMT+01:00 2025 App version: 3.5.16 The log file also contains a java.net.SocketException which happens due to sending a request to a closed socket. But idk if that's the cause of the crash, nothing else looks suspicious (at least for me)
Luke 42077 Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 Hi, can you please try 3.5.21? We have added new logging to help chase this down. Thanks.
quiet_blueberry 1 Posted December 17, 2025 Author Posted December 17, 2025 Hi, I tried it with 3.5.21 and attached the crash log. Maybe interesting to mention: I don't have this issue with all the other stuff I'm watching currently but they all have different audio codecs like Opus, EAC3, ... while the one I test this issue with has FLAC (I sent the details of the played media in this thread on October 26). Although it's still crashing when starting to play the episode it's more stable than in the beginning of this thread. Today I was able to start playing the episode like 10 times before it crashed first. Maybe it was luck, because after that it crashed every <5 tries. I tried to disable or enable the subtitles but it crashes anyway, so that's not the reason i guess. Please let me know if there are other details that may help like any settings or more details about the media or so. emby_android_1765984985268.txt
