noinch 2 Posted October 9, 2025 Posted October 9, 2025 Hi. Trying to install EMBY Server (most recent release) on my EX2 Ultra (latest firmware, 5.31.108). I start the process, and all I get is a box that says Updating. It eventually times out and returns me to the login page. Have tried: emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.36_arm.bin emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.7.14.0_arm.bin Have restarted the EX2 Ultra. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks!

noinch 2 Posted October 9, 2025 Author Posted October 9, 2025 It's this until it times out and returns to the login page.
sa2000 673 Posted October 9, 2025 Posted October 9, 2025 My WD NAS is a MyCloudPR4100 and there is no issue with the install I had a WD EX2 Ultra user before have issues because the drive path was set to "/mnt/HD/HD_b2/" and not "/mnt/HD/HD_a2" If you can enable ssh on the NAS and use PuTTY and see what setup log files have been created and what the drive paths are When you login with the sshd username into the NAS, get the output from "df" and see how the main HD path is setup - see if it is "/mnt/HD/HD_a2" Go through the install for 4.9.1.80 using "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin" Does it say it detected an earlier version? When it hangs and you are sure it is hung and not slow, go back to the ssh session and get this log file /tmp/embyserver.log you can do cat /tmp/embyserver.log or use WinSCP to download it next, lets is see what files exist in this folder by doing an "ls -ail" cd /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/embyserver ls -ail

PuTTY screen doesn't show I've typed my pw. I've tried copy/paste. Access denied. Have no idea how to "get the output from 'df' and see how the main HD path is setup - see if it is '/mnt/HD/HD_a2'." Why does tech support assume everyone has the same knowledge? 19 hours ago, sa2000 said: Does it say it detected an earlier version? Not sure how this could be possible, as I've never installed EMBY Server on this device. 19 hours ago, sa2000 said: When it hangs and you are sure it is hung and not slow, go back to the ssh session and get this log file /tmp/embyserver.log you can do cat /tmp/embyserver.log or use WinSCP to download it next, lets is see what files exist in this folder by doing an "ls -ail" cd /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/embyserver ls -ail Have no idea how to do any of this. noinch 2 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 (edited) I'm figuring it out. The main HD path is "/mnt/HD/HD_a2" And this is where I'm stuck. I assume "Go through the install for 4.9.1.80 using "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin"" means to install it using KiTTY (PuTTY sux)? But I have no clue how to do that. sa2000 673 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 38 minutes ago, noinch said: "" means to install it using KiTTY (PuTTY sux)? No Just the load the WD Dashboard and login with the admin account for the NAS Then select Apps Click on Emby Server below Installed App - i assume you have an existing old version installed and then toggle "Run App" to the off position to make sure it is stopped then click on "Install An App Manually" and install the 4.9.1.80 binary package
noinch 2 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 I've always run it from a Windows machine. That machine crapped out on me, so I'm trying to install it on my NAS and it fails.
noinch 2 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 No log file named embyserver.log No directory called embyserver.
noinch 2 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 Okay... apologies. I did some more digging and it looks like I did install it 4 years ago. I have no idea why given that I've run it on a Windows machine since forever. What's the next step from here? It doesn't show up in my Installed Apps list, so do I just relocate the emby folder above?
sa2000 673 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 I was not aware this is your first install on the NAS 4 minutes ago, noinch said: No log file named embyserver.log Is this after going through the NAS dashboard / Install an App manually 1 minute ago, noinch said: It doesn't show up in my Installed Apps list, so do I just relocate the emby folder above? Try renaming the two emby folders showing
sa2000 673 Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 and on the WD label on the NAS - does the Part Number start with "WDBVBZ" ?
noinch 2 Posted October 10, 2025 Author Posted October 10, 2025 I renamed those directories, rebooted the NAS, waited several hours, and tried to install again. Same result: Updating... then timed out
sa2000 673 Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 and is it still the case that there is no file named "embyserver.log" under "/tmp" ? I have looked at the contents of the file "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin" and using 7-zip I managed to see the contents of the "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm" using 7-zip again and all the files there should be copied to the "/mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/embyserver/" directory by WD when installing manually Is the "/mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/" directory still not showing an embyserver directory? Can you copy out these files and zip and send me the zip by Private Message /usr/local/config/config.xml /usr/local/config/app_update.xml /usr/local/config/system.conf you could download the binary file again in case there was an issue with that download
sa2000 673 Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 and if you can also include these in the zip that you send me /var/log/kern.log /var/log/kern.log.1 and sorry to go on ... are you able to install any other program using the manual install method for the NAS ? Not sure what you can try with
noinch 2 Posted October 11, 2025 Author Posted October 11, 2025 No embyserver.log under tmp The /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/ directory still isn't showing an embyserver directory Check yer DMs The word emby does not appear in any of the files you requested
sa2000 673 Posted October 12, 2025 Posted October 12, 2025 Thank You The provided files and information given above confirms: This is definitely a WD MyCloudEX2Ultra running on OS5 - version 5.31.108.0920.2025 and there is over 800 Gb free on the disk. The amount of free space on /tmp and /var/log is comparable to that for my MuCloudPR4100. There is no evidence of any system issue and no evidence now of any installed emby server package And you are not getting this error, which indicates that the binary file is the right one for your EX2 Ultra NAS I am at a loss as to what to suggest. I do not have a WD EX2 Ultra to try it on. You can try the following rename the downloaded file "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin" and download it again from https://emby.media/western-digital-server.html Try one more time to manually install it If that fails the same way, see if you can manually install other apps If the issue is specific to the Emby Server install of "emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.9.1.80_arm.bin", try the latest beta which is now 4.9.2.3 and see if it is getting stuck the same way If all fail, I will see if someone has a WD EX2 Ultra
sa2000 673 Posted October 12, 2025 Posted October 12, 2025 sorry there is another directory to check cd /var/www ls -ail is there an embyserver directory

Nope Tried manually installing a different app... nope
