Need help understanding version numbering

So Stable is now the most current and Beta is behind?
How did Stable jump 44 versions?
Why are there two Betas?

I am so confused by all this

4.9.1 was released as a "quasi-stable" version for some platform (I don't recall which) that had an update which made it require a change that was only in the beta.

No, I would just stay on the branch that you prefer to be on. Both will continue to get updated.
