michaeltruncale 6 Posted October 2, 2025 Author Posted October 2, 2025 @Luke@ebr I made a copy of the Emby Server folder. If I uninstall Emby, and then reinstall from the website, how can I get my settings and configurations from the old to the new. (my logs show I had backup & restore occurring however I never set a location to backup to so it sounds like it may be a manual process for me) Do you have a different solution or idea to try? Currently dead in the water. Not meaning to vent, but I'm going to vent... my old Windows 7 Ultimate Emby Server worked great till it got fried, I tried Emby on the Mac Mini M4 with mixed results, and had to end up buying a mini PC to host Emby instead because it wasn't working as solid as it had on the Windows 7 Ultimate. Then last night the update just killed Emby.
michaeltruncale 6 Posted October 2, 2025 Author Posted October 2, 2025 Okay I've uninstalled Emby Server completely and reinstalled it. It is now running. The Update last night broke my Emby setup, I made a copy of the old folder, how can I import any settings and configuration items?
Solution sa2000 674 Posted October 2, 2025 Solution Posted October 2, 2025 @michaeltruncale Hi. At the moment you have a new installation of Emby Server without your old data / settings - correct ? You have saved a copy of the old "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server" folder contents - correct ? Assuming you have, lets try the following steps Shut Down Emby Server and check that Windows Task Manager does not show the EmbyServer.exe process running Double check that you have saved a copy of the contents of this folder "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata" before you zapped all the data and uninstalled. Check that you have programdata copy and its sub-folders cache, config, data, logs, etc.. and that they do have files in them from your original setup Having established you have saved copy, lets empty the current contents of "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata" - deleting all new content that got created after the new install Now copy the contents of the saved copy of "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata" into "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata" Check that the folder has your old saved programdata\cache, config. data etc subfolders and you have not ended up with programdata\programdata - end result is that you have these folders C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\cache C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\config C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\data C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\logs C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\metadata C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\plugins C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\root C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\sync C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\transcoding-temp C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\updates Now edit a file to setup debug logging Edit this file "C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\config\system.xml" to make sure this line is in the file <EnableDebugLevelLogging>true</EnableDebugLevelLogging> Check first if there is a line for "EnableDebugLevelLogging" and if there is, then just change the false to true and save the file. If there isn't - then add the line and save Now launch Emby Server If it exits immediately like before - get the Logs and attach here and can see if the debug logging gives some clues Also - get me the Windows Event Viewer logs - you can save and send me in a zip by private message - Launch Event Viewer, Expand Windows Logs and select Application and in right hand side pane select, "Save All Events as" and select a filename to save to and keep the "Save as type" as "Event Files (*.evtx)" - note this may take few seconds to complete Repeat the same action for the "System" event log - so we have 2 saved evtx files - one for Application and one for System. Zip and send me privately. May have some info about the earlier issues. (May need to use SysInternals ProcessMonitor if the debug logs and event logs do not have shed any light on the issue - but will come that later)
michaeltruncale 6 Posted October 3, 2025 Author Posted October 3, 2025 Okay after uninstalling and re-installing Emby Server it did launch, it prompted me to setup the server. I stopped and shut down the service in the Task Manager and then copied over everything from: C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\ and then I relaunched Emby Server, it crashed again, doing the same behavior as it did before. I then cleared out the /programdata/ folder, and only brought over the \config\ and launched Emby Server, it still prompted me to "setup" a few things in the server however it did retain the users, and the settings. I haven't copied any of the other folders over in fear that it'll crash it again.
sa2000 674 Posted October 3, 2025 Posted October 3, 2025 Ok so you only brought in some users info and some global settings but not the databases (but i presume you did have saved copy of the old programdata ? - but just decided to start afresh with the media libraries in case of issues)

When I only brought in \Config\ I was able to launch Emby Server. I was thinking of bringing in other folders, one by one but have been on a client go live. If you want me to bring in one folder at a time I can do that and let you know what happens. I'm not entirely sure which folders are more critical than others, i.e., just with \Config\ it gave me my Users, and it seems to have already had my libraries setup (movies, tv shows, etc.), and collections, and playlists. I did have to change a few settings on some Users to restrict some content, and update some movies to different ratings based on preferences as that was not present. And it had no images, all that stuff had to redownload. Let me know if you want me to bring in more folders, and in which order and I can test them one by one to see where it fails.
sa2000 674 Posted October 3, 2025 Posted October 3, 2025 Just now, michaeltruncale said: I have all the saved programdata from before, yes, but when I brought it all in I got the not launching behavior but we should have debug logging enabled now with the edit i suggested - so may be logs would have had some clues Anyway - if you are happy with startover - then fine.

You seem to have progressed and have your libraries in place. So probably just go forward and scan all the media
Neminem 1518 Posted October 3, 2025 Posted October 3, 2025 I would have started by excluded all consume plugins, that might not have been updated and break Emby.
