sundevil67 28 Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 Is there any way to replace the embedded subtitles (at least I think that's what they are) in the original language with English from the SRT file I manually added so they aren't competing in the same area? For some reason I was able to find subtitles for "Legend of Zang Hai" on onopensubtitles.com, but Emby couldn't through the plugin & an in-app search. There are 40 episodes of this show's first season I think, so while it's watchable like this, I'd definitely prefer it cleaned up & displayed with a single language. Thanks.
Neminem 1516 Posted September 22, 2025 Posted September 22, 2025 Are the subs there if you play the media locally ? Is it possible the subs are burned in from your source ?

I suppose I could download it through emby & test it that way ... if I could figure out where it puts those files, which I gave up on a long time ago. If there's no way to change something that'd affect all of the episodes, it's not worth exploring really. I was curious if this could be adjusted the way sometimes you can choose between audio tracks .. though that's something I haven't seen in a very long time on anything; maybe that's also just not possible with an STRM situation; but I'm obviously ignorant in matters like these. Thanks for the input.
Luke 42077 Posted September 23, 2025 Posted September 23, 2025 We'd need to know the media info in order to provide a good answer to this.
sundevil67 28 Posted September 23, 2025 Author Posted September 23, 2025 I was able to download the media file, but it is a 333MB .mkv. I opened it in VLC, and it looks like there are Chinese subtitles burned-in. When I add the english SRT track in VLC, they both compete like how it looks when I watch it through Emby (attached). Looks like I am SOL - unless anyone knows a workaround that can be applied to all of the episodes at once. I thought of maybe increasing the text size with the black background & trying to adjust the position so it completely covers the original text, which I accomplished very easily in VLC...but I think that'd be much too difficult to replicate within Emby. Thanks for the input.

Why do you feel that way? Increase text size, add solid background color and move bottom edge position 5% by 5% up in user Subtitle preferences, test and repeat until you get satisfactory result

While I'm super grateful I can finally convert M3U to strm, & have a chance to add subtitles vs. just not watching something through my provider's native app that usually doesn't have them, the implementation isn't great. Like when the timing is wrong, and the offset you specify doesn't get saved (this capability would be a game-changer) so the process has to be repeated every time, or appearance settings require logging out or restarting the server before they'll take effect. Don't get me wrong, I'll definitely give it a try for the next one, but admittedly when there is too much to tweak re: the subtitles, I usually find myself just watching something else.

Which client app? As those changes should be instantaneous and not require re-login. Moreso, during-playback appearance change will hopefully be implemented into more apps soon:

Moreso, during-playback appearance change will hopefully be implemented into more apps soon: I added myself to the thread about the save capability being added to the subtitle timing...that's about all of the support I can provide on that. The last experience I had with the appearance settings, I was using the Samsung smart TV app & making the change remotely from my Macbook over the public internet. The other one I was inside my LAN, but also making the change on a computer that wasn't running the server, for another user... So there were a few hops. I'll try a couple of more specific use-cases next time I watch & post back here when I can.
