Changed ISP - Remote Connection Lost

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just changed from Spectrum to Google. On both ISPs I used my own router, the same Wifi 7 router on both wtih a set static IP. Unpluged the Spectrum from the router, plugged in the Google to the router. That was the only change. My Emby server is set wtih everyone on Emby Connect. The server is set up uPnP. The router and the emby server have been reset multiple times. No one is able to get a connection remotely now. Attached my server log. Please help, there has to be something simple I am missing.

Well, you'll have different addresses on the two services, so you need to make that change as well.

Have you checked whether you can get access using the (new) IP address rather than Connect?

Have you checked whether your new connection uses cgNAT (which would block any incoming connections to anything)?

Thanks Paul, Yes, those addresses were changed. Comparing my Router to the Emby dashboard my LAN is still my static IP consistent to the router, and my WAN is the current IP listed there and verified. From the App, if I try to access the new IP direcetly (outside of connect) it is still unable to reach. I validated with tracert that my current ISP is not using a cgNAT.

If online checker shows port open then is should work.  But since you changes Router/Network connections have you verified MS did not change your Network type to Public instead of Private with the new connection?

Maybe some firewall rule in the Google Modem (or ONT?)  is blocking inbound connections?

Sadly no. Everything as it should be. Just to test I reboot my router again to see if for some reason my Emby server was not updating the WAN. But the dashboard is pulling the new IP just fine.  i went into all my network settings and ensured that anything and everything with a firewall is gone, and they all were. From my dashbaord, I click on the Remote WAN Access link and I can go right in. I can look at the address bar and see that I am entering via the IP. So I go back to any of the mobile apps, test on the LAN and I get in. I turn off mobile wifi to just use data and be off the network trying the WAN and I get Unable To Reach Server. I try to add server and just enter the IP and no luck either.

This had me thinking, so i spent all sort of time on hold waiting for GFiber Techs and they assured me that the Fiber jack / ONT doesn't have any sort of firewall within it. I was hopeful here!!!

Another thought...

On your phone:

  • turn off WiFi
  • open a web browser and enter <WANIP>:<EmbyPORT>

??

My apologies, I didn't mention that. When I do that I cannot get through fro mthe mobile side.

Okay, then can you ask one of your users do this:

open a web browser and enter <WANIP>:<EmbyPORT>

Here is the breakdown just to check all my bases haha. When i do that....

From Mobile - Wifi Off/WAN - No Connection (Verified on 3 devices)

From Mobile - Wifi On/WAN - Success

Local PC - LAN - Success

Local PC - WAN - Success

How did you setup port forwarding?

Listed as such.

Device IP: <LAN>  (Verified to dashboard)

External Port: 8096

Internal Port: 8096

Protocol: TCP/UDP

Then I have a duplicate for port 8920. Then just to check I went to my Emby dashboard, Network Settings and verified 8920 to the https public & local, and 8096 http to public and local

Not sure what to say.  I am on Fiber also, but ATT.  Their ONT/Modem (I promise it has to behave like a modem) requires going in putting in bridge mode so the my WAN ip is forwarded to my router.  It has an extensive firewall section, but luckily a single check to disable the whole thing.

I cannot image Google ONT/Modem doesn't have an extensive interface.  If you think about it, what about the folks that don't know how to setup a secondary router and just want parental controls etc. via the existing Google piece of kit.  It took me a while (4 techs) to finally connect with one who understand what bridge/pass-through mode meant so I dunno.  YMMYV

On Emby Dashboard, your In Home LAN ip address should be 192.168.xxx.xxx or 172.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.10.xxx.xxx.   Your router WAN ip should be your actual WAN ip address, not some 192.168.xxx.xxx or 172.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.10.xxx.xxx.  and your ONT/modem should be in bridge/pass-through mode with firewall 100% disabled (hence letting your router taking care of that part also.)   You really need to log into your ONT to take a peek and not take their word for it.

Aside from that, not sure.

See that is some of where I am getting mixed signals from Google. I had two techs come out to fix a line that Spectrum cut and both of them told me that I did not need to use their "Router" and just to plug it directly into the FiberJack (Google's ONT thats on the wall). Plus in the documentation when using your own router it says the same. https://gfiber.com/support/en/answer/1816/ But then this is where it gets messy. One person on the phone told me I may need to go through their "router" and go into bridge mode, but then if I was getting internet without doing it not to worry about it.

I can confirm however that my Dashboard LAN is 192.168.xxx.xxx and my WAN is the true IP and not a 192 / 172 / 10.10.  Last night I started set up their router to put into brige mode since it wouldnt hurt but then had a family emergency. So I think I need to run that all the way through, putting theirs into Bridge mode and seeing how it pans out. There is something blocking it somewhere and Im starting to wonder if having their "router" there in bridge mode is doing more for the connection than the hardware techs might know.

So I would take a computer with an Ethernet cable and plug directly into their FiberJack on the wall.  I think the FiberJack is the ONT since if you were using their traditional setup, it says to plug the Gfiber router or your personal router directly into the FiberJack.  Once plugged in check your IP Address (Windows Key-CMD-Enter  type ipconfig)  You should see a 192. or 172. or 10. IP address.  Make a note of your gateway address, copy it if you can.  This typically ends in a .1

Open web browser and plug in the gateway address into your web browser and see what happens and where it takes you.

sorry for the late response. All of that i had already done and looked perfect. So i decided to just completely revamp and rebuild on a NAS, I factory reset the router just to be safe. Exact same settings as before and wham it worked. So who knows! All i know is no more upset kids.
