DoctorEvil 0 Posted August 6, 2025 Posted August 6, 2025 Hello, Before I go into this I want to thank the emby developers, great software that just works whether on PC, android, etc. I set up my server on my rig and I am having no trouble doing local connects via my smart TV or other computers on the network, so I wanted to test out remote access sharing For some reason my dashboard only displays the Remote Access IP in IPV6 so I'm not likely to use that as a share for either myself or others I plan to give access to the network. I decided to try using Emby Connect to get it working, here's what happened in detail. I installed Emby connect on my phone to test out the remote access feature. I disabled WIFI so that I could try to access the server remotely. I logged into my credentials, having already had the server locally connected on my phone, but could not connect via Data/remote access. I set up Port Forwarding on my router via 8096 (using http only), also I set up split tunneling via my VPN (Mozilla VPN, which works by putting emby server in an exclusion list). No dice. UPnP is also enabled as well, so I figured that might negate the need to set up port forwarding. Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

DoctorEvil 0 Posted August 6, 2025 Author Posted August 6, 2025 (edited) Ok so I did some more testing, I found my IPV4 external address @ canyouseeme.org. Connected to the server via that way, though it was on the same network it seemed to have worked on my server PC, as in i connected to the remote address via my server Pc though I don't know if this is just it redundantly connecting to the server. Is this an issue with the app? I'm wondering if its because my server is http and the app at least from what I gather is standard https, is there a way to route the app to be http default? I'd like to have my server be available on non-PCs out of my network. Edited August 6, 2025 by DoctorEvil

Sprunki Retake Yeah, Emby Connect and remote access can be finicky — the app expects HTTPS by default, so using HTTP on 8096 often causes connection issues externally, even with port forwarding. I got it working only after enabling SSL (let’s encrypt or reverse proxy) and making sure my ISP isn’t blocking the port. If you’re serious about remote access, a reverse proxy with HTTPS is the most reliable path. Edited August 7, 2025 by SprunkiRetake
DoctorEvil 0 Posted August 7, 2025 Author Posted August 7, 2025 (edited) Got it, I think I should be able to still make it work on most apps. The HTTPS process seems a bit intense, especially since I can't exactly find a free domain registering place, other than weebly though I don't know how secure that is since it's a subdomain rather than a full domain. My roku TV takes IP logins to the server, I'm assuming that those I share the library with via remote access can do the same. Would HTTPS be necessary for that as well? I'd like to keep this as secure as possible, but I also want to still have some possibility of sharing this outside my network without too much hassle. EDIT: If HTTPS is highly recommended, which I can see on this guide --> What's the simplest way I could set up HTTPS? I'm running on windows, and not exactly good with command line interface but I can if necessary. I'd love to do it with a reverse proxy as well, the domain name for me is something I'd like to consider skipping if there's no free decent domain registration services around (freenom apparently isn't doing it any more according to google?), and I'm really only sharing this with family outside of myself. pwhodges 2012 Posted August 7, 2025 Posted August 7, 2025 HTTPS requires a domain name. One of the cheapest sources is the oddly named portbun.com (which I use) - .com is under $8 a year and .xyz is around $2 a year, for instance. If you want HTTPS, setting it up in a reverse proxy is often easier than doing it directly in Emby - in particular, Caddy does all the certificate acquisition and renewal for you automatically. Before going ahead, you might want to check that it will work at all, by confirming that your ISP is not using cgNAT. Paul 1
rogertuckett 0 Posted August 10, 2025 Posted August 10, 2025 I can connect to emby under the home Wifi, but it won't connect remotely. I've searched the help, and all the correct boxes seem to be checked. Also, emby plays music folders continuously on my phone, but on Roku, It plays only one song at a time. I checked the continuous play, but still no work Any help?
pwhodges 2012 Posted August 10, 2025 Posted August 10, 2025 Have you checked whether you are blocked by cgNAT? You should start separate threads for different queries to avoid a mess building up; but anyway, on my Roku TV I can play music from either the Album or the Folder view, and the whole album is put on the playlist and played in order. There are different commands for playing one track, all tracks, or all starting from here - are you sure you aren't just choosing the wrong one? Paul
