Grimx00 0 Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 When I play video on Emby's built in player I experience significantly higher cpu usage and battery drain compared to using an external player (VLC). As you can see in the screen shots Emby uses almost double the cpu utilization and battery drain (485mAh vs 251mAh) while also making my phone very hot. My theory is that Emby forcing software decoding for h.264 for some reason. I think it happens for h.265 as well but to a lesser degree. visproduction 315 Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 Subtitles and Audio? Graphic subs are perhpas being converted by Emby, while VLC can play them drectly. Audio can run into a similar situation.

visproduction 315 Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 ass subs should be fine. AC3 audio may often need converting and that uses up CPU clicks. Check the playback details to see if AC3 is allowed to go direct with your setup.
Luke 42077 Posted July 30, 2025 Posted July 30, 2025 That is surprising given that it is direct playing and rendering with hardware decoding (MediaCodec). If you turn off the subtitles how does it compare?
Grimx00 0 Posted July 30, 2025 Author Posted July 30, 2025 Turning off subtitles definitely lowers the cpu usage.
