LocknLoad 1 Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 Hi, My trusty win7 server became terminally ill recently and I finally decided to move to Unraid. I just finished building my Media library. I have structured folders on my Unraid array. The exact same as I had on my Windows server for 10+ years of using Emby/Mediabrowser. Unraid version 7.1.4 Emby Docker version 4.8.11.0 I have a HD Movies as a root folder and each movie in it's own sub folder I have a 4K UHD root folder and each movie in it's own sub folder I have a Movie Collections root folder with a bunch of 'secondary' sub folders and they contain various movies in 'tertiary' sub folders (see attached) Each collection folder has a collection.xml file that I normally fill out manually Each collection folder has the relevant metadata images The issue that is driving me crazy is as follows.... When browsing the HD movie library, I previously could collapse each collection into one instance to reduce the clutter and allow better structure. I have tried the 'Movies' tab display option then clicking the three dots and moving the 'group items into collection' toggle. That has no effect. The toggle seems to reset and it is always off when I go back in (see attached). When I click on 'Folders' tab display it collapses the view to three root folders which also did not happen previously on my Win7 instance (see attached) I have read that changes where done on 4.6 with regards to collections but my Win7 was running just fine about until about 2-3 weeks ago. Hoping someone can provide me some clear guidance on how best to resolve this. Thanks. embyserver.txt embyserver-63889084800.txt
Luke 42077 Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 Hi, since Emby Server 4.7+, these collection folders are no longer used. Instead they come from metadata. Have you taken a look at this? Collections
LocknLoad 1 Posted July 27, 2025 Author Posted July 27, 2025 Hi Luke, So are you saying I need to manually recreate via the 3 dot/tick method every one of my collections to the new metadata format? If I do that... they will show up like before v4.7 in the main movie folders as a single item that you can drill down into? I already have custom collection names and artwork that I don't feel like doing over again. If I can just add them via the 3 dot/tick method then that is the path of least resistance. I have close to 100 collections. Can you elaborate on the rationale behind the change? It wasn't broken so why fix it?

No need to manually create the collections via the "..." menu Collections have become a native part of the Movie library configuration, and it is based on TMDB metadata: As long as each item has current metadata that includes the collection id, Emby will create the collections for you. Then you can use the 'Group items into Collections' option to collapse them in the main Movies view if you wish.
LocknLoad 1 Posted July 29, 2025 Author Posted July 29, 2025 Hi, I think I am missing something.... Today I have close to 80 folders containing various collections. Each folder contains some metadata that is mainly a folder.jpg, logo.png, backdrop.jpg and a collection.xml file. The .xml file contains no significant data.... They all contain only this information and the only the local title and date changes. So do I now need to edit each one and add a TMDBId field value or does the '...' process do that automagically?

Hi, no, as mentioned, these folders and xml files are no longer used. All you need to do is use the web interface to create your collections. Another option is to enable the option on your movie library settings to import collection information from MovieDb. Then you will get collections created automatically, although this will require refreshing metadata on your existing movies after you enable it.
LocknLoad 1 Posted August 3, 2025 Author Posted August 3, 2025 Hi, So I spent the weekend manually creating +-100 collections. It was somewhat tedious and I pretty much had to use the same MovieDB naming convention to automate the metadata and images. For some of my unique collections and custom images the edit function with drag and drop works great. In the end I now have things working as before. I really like that it auto defaults to sorting by year.... that was a welcome bonus. I can see the appeal of creating collections this way. I will still probably continue to make collection folders but that it is more for my data storage and tracking needs. 1
Luke 42077 Posted August 4, 2025 Posted August 4, 2025 Thanks for the update. You probably could have also enabled the library option to import collection information from MovieDb, and then refreshed metadata on your existing movies. For new movies that you add going forward, that would be a more automatic approach.
