Subtitles selectively not working in Emby Android

I have a season of a show downloaded with 4 subtitle language options. Weirdly, the 3 non-English options work fine, but the English (default) option does not display (the non-eng options are all PGSSUB, but the English one is SUBRIP). The subs work fine on Emby web, and within the Android app it is only confined to the one season of the show (however I did obtain each of the seasons from different sources). Not sure what would cause this, maybe just something weird and singular with the season I downloaded? The subs are contained in the video file. I tried fiddling with the default sub options but nothing seems to affect anything.
