Emby wacked my D223j NAS! DSM 7.2 Emby 4.8.8.0-724080800

Emby has been working fine for about a year until a week ago when it started with my HDD's flashing and a complete slowdown of both my NAS and Emby. Finally got to the point I could not login.

Long story short after much work I got logged in to my NAS and immediately uninstalled Emby. Rebooted NAS and everything went back to 100% normal.

So I reinstalled Emby, and sure enough my whole system freaked out again with my HDD's going crazy. Emby changed something (updated?) and it was all downhere from there.

What's going on? As a Premiere member I would like Emby back acting right.

Ideas?

Latest info from Synology support....

According to your description, the main time point when you reproduced the problem was around 13:30. We checked the logs and found the following anomalies:

1. The first information recorded by the option to periodically record system status was around 10:33. The overall load of the current NAS was very low

2. From 10:39, the I/O load of the NAS began to increase abnormally, rising to 10 in a short period of time[1]

3. Around 13:53, the I/O wait of the device increased to 37[2]. Such a high I/O load will cause the service to be almost completely unavailable

It should be noted that high I/O load means that the current The performance bottleneck is limited by the performance of the hard disk itself (you can understand it as the CPU is waiting for the hard disk during the operation). In this case, it is recommended that you consider optimizing this problem in the following ways:

1. For the NAS itself, since the problem is caused by insufficient performance on the hard disk side, you can try to replace the existing HDD with a SSD to obtain higher read and write performance
2. Because it seems that the following processes are occupying a large amount of system resources when the problem occurs, you can also contact the developer of the package to confirm what function in the package generates the relevant process and try to close/adjust the relevant function:

/var/packages/EmbyServer/target/bin/ffmpeg -loglevel +timing -y -print_graphs_file /var/packages/EmbyServer/var/logs/ffmpeg-transcode-5a9a50a0-80d4-4ad8-b34a-7620357a48e6_1graph.txt -copyts -start_at_zero -f matroska,webm -c:v:0 hevc -noautorotate -i /volume1/video/Bittorrents/My Mom Jayne (2025) [2160p] [4K] [WEB] [5.1] [YTS.MX]/My.Mom.Jayne.2025.2160p.4K.WEB.x265.10bit.AAC5.1-[YTS.MX].mkv -filter_complex [0:0]scale@f1=width=1920:height=1080,f+

I don't think the Synology ds223j can handle transcoding of 4K videos

Suggest you limit your media to lower res media or avoid transcoding

The process you identified using a lot of the IO was a transcode process for this movie

PS: Suggest you update to the latest version avable for download here https://emby.media/synology-server.html - the version that is in the Synology App store is behind.

This issue is not caused by any transcoding. The movie you refer to was not and has not even been opened for playing.

The mere fact that Emby server is running on my NAS is causing this issue. I am not playing anything at all. These issues are happening just because the Emby server is running, not transcoding or playing any media.

OR are you saying Emby was trying to automatically transcode this movie just because I downloaded it to my NAS? I don't understand this part.

Which of the Emby versions on the link is the one for my DS223j nas? I don't want to make a mistake trying the wrong one.

Thanks

The log would show the whole ffmpeg command. Possibly running ffmpeg to extract images / thumbmnails if you have that enabled.

Looking at the spec https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products/DS223j#specs it is a Realtek RTD1619B CPU which is ARM processor

A web search for this processor finds it as ARM v8 processor

So i believe the 4.8.11.0 download for you is this emby-server-synology72_4.8.11.0_armv8.spk

Thank you for your help.

This install did the trick. Everything is working fine, back better than ever. This version is so much faster than what I was using before(when it was working right).
