Error when trying to open some photos - There was an error processing the request

Setup:

  • Emby running on Synology NAS (RS2418+)
  • Emby version 4.8.11.0-724081100 (Just updated tonight from 4.8.8 after having a problem)
  • Browsing from W11 computer with both Chrome and Firefox (all updated with latest updates and versions)

I have a library only for photos. Within that folder are subfolders. Each subfolder represents an album, and within each folder are photos. We normally take 300-500 photos at an event. I create a new subfolder for the event, drop the photos in the subfolder, and everything has been working great. This past weekend we took almost 1,500 photos. I did the normal and dropped all the photos in. I thought everything was fine. I opened the new folder in Emby, could see there were a lot of photos and all of them had thumbnails. Happened to scroll to the bottom and open the last one and received the following error:
"There was an error processing the request. Please try again later."

I waited about an hour, and the same error persists. After poking around in the album a bit, the last photo I can open is #1241. Starting with #1242 I get that error for every photo I've tried after #1241. I went to a few of my other albums (folders) to see if they had any problem, and each of them were able to open their photos that I randomly selected including the last one in each. Just seems to be this one folder with this amount of photos.

Here's the fun part. If I open #1241 and then use the "next" button on the bottom left, it will show #1242 without a problem. Once I got it to show #1243, but never again. Afterwards, it jumps back to the first picture in the album as if there are no more despite being able to see them in the full list page along with their thumbnails.

Here's some more fun. On the Home page I have the "Latest Photos" module enabled. Within there I can see photos presented well past #1242 and I can open them in full size with no problem whatsoever. Despite this, if I go back to the folder view and go to that same photo and try to open it, it still presents the above error.

I have waited over 2 hours now in case there was some additional processing that just needed to complete, but the problem still exists. I've attached the logs. The last lines in there are of me trying to open a photo that presented the above error.

Thank you for your support, and please let me know if you need any additional information.

I cannot relate what you are describing to the provided log. Would need exact times/file name paths or photo titles to find corresponding entries in the log

You mention running on 4.8.11 but the log you attached is from 4.8.8.0

The log shows these albums disappearing, photos removed and then coming back again and being scanned

Album: "2024-10-25 TNT Showcase" Removed 2025-07-08 16:35:58 and brought back at 2025-07-08 16:52:03

Album: "2024-11-09 ACFL Fall Chanpionship"  Removed 2025-07-08 16:35:58 and then brought back at 2025-07-08 16:56:40

Album: "2024-10-06 Madison Small 16O" Removed 2025-07-08 17:19:44 and then brought back 2025-07-08 17:20:13

Also these albums were scanned/refreshed

Best to have a controlled test to reproduce the issue and noting down times/taking screenshots and then providing that information with the server log

Might get more with debug logging enabled - see server settings / logs

So enable debug logging, restart the server and then do a controlled test and providing details of file names/times and screenshots and the emby server log

Hi, we are working on getting an update out to Synology, but in the meantime I think if you install 4.8.11 manually from our website this will be resolved.

I believe the OP already updated to 4.8.11, but a new log should be uploaded with times if the problem still persists.

Yes that would be helpful. Thanks.

Apologies everyone, for the false positive and for my delayed response. We were on the road again so I wasn't able to check this again until today.

The issue is resolved after updating the correct Emby server. I'm running two, so when the problem popped up my first thought was to check for updates. I updated my internal one and then continued to check my external one to see if the problem was fixed 🤦‍♂️ After updating my external one today to 4.8.11 everything is working as expected.

Thank you, for everyones prompt replies and assistance, and for a great product! 💪
