images arent being grabbed from the server

TLDR: The images arent being grabbed from the server, I have to get them manually. 

For about a week now (maybe longer?) since the update approximately, I am no longer getting images arriving automatically from TVDB etc. This is for ones that identify correctly. I can edit images and use the magnifying glass to select the default poster (DVD cover shape) but these are not being grabbed by default, so all Im getting is the a narrower horizontal screen-shaped image (not the proper DVD cover) on the default DVD-cover shaped images. 
this is happening only for new and renamed items, existing ones grabbed previously are fine. its happening across libraries so its not a change in library settings. I tried turning off the preferred image download language from english to nothing but no change. I have all image sources turned on except for TOMB episodes and fanart seasons (Ive found those a problem)  so it has plenty to choose from and obvioulsy this isnt the issue as the magnifying glass is finding them..... I have save artwork into media folders switched on but i tried it switched off and it made no difference. I checked in API keys and no TVDB keys in there either.
Any ideas?
