Maybe, the wording to me sounds like users won't be able to change quality at all with the setting though.

Good point, dev may need to elaborate more here if it is overriding Auto or all Client configured quality settings.

There needs to be a better wording to this, this setting is confusing.

I have to ask the big 3 questions like a 6 year old.

How does is work ?

Where does it work ?

When does it work ?

It's not spelled out, when to apply or why.

I tried to force the setting to appear in Emby but it doesn't seem to do anything, at least not yet.
The feature is most likely not finished.

LOL we all have different interpretation of it. Based on the option text:

"Allow transcoding to reduce quality, based on the app quality setting..."

I would assume - if disabled - it will override both Auto fallback and in-app user quality reducing, i.e. effectively only allowing native (and higher) bitrates.

That is how i understand it as well, effectively making it so users can't lower the quality if actually needed. :(

So a better wording as to what it does 🤷‍♂️

Oh well.. For now i will just make all connections look as lan connections for Emby.
Fixes the problem. :)

A new user restriction is being added here. So now you'll be able to allow them to transcode based on supported media, but not based on their quality setting.

Hi @Lukewhen can we expect to see this in the beta branch?

Any chance these can also be library-based or resolution-based? For example I am fine with 1080p transcodes but not with 4K transcodes (they may as well watch the 1080p copy instead), so if I could disable only 4K-source transcodes, it would be really helpful.

You already can. 😉

I have a similar script but it's not very reliable. Some sessions simply can't be stopped and just get stuck transcoding, never mind the messages. I can kill the ffmpeg processes for those stuck sessions repeatedly and it eventually does stop but I would prefer if it never started at all.

We have been talking it over internally and it's going to be a little different from what I previously showed. Instead it's going to be a default remote auto quality per user, so that as long as they leave their quality setting on auto, you can control what that value will be.

Sounds good. Will that list contain Direct play? I don't care if somebody is streaming at 10 or 20 mbps as long as they are not transcoding :)

If you just want a complete block then you can already do that via user permissions.

That's awesome and very much needed! :)
