Noticing a few annoying issues with Emby lately

Hi guys,

I'm running the latest version of Emby on windows 11 and my data is stored on a Synology NAS. I have a lifetime subscription to premiere.

3 things i'm noticing lately that are pretty annoying.

1: When resuming a movie or show, it takes a really long time to actually resume. Sometimes up to 2 minutes. starting a movie or skipping in a movie is instant.

2: I use a Sony Bravia 65" tv and have Emby set to run in desktop mode. It always starts like this when i reboot my computer, but after a day or 2 it switches modes randomly. Main things i miss from Desktop mode are the instant play button on the posters on the home screen, and the buttons on the side to scroll (horizontal) for more items. When it swaps modes i have to use the scroll wheel and then move the moues left or right. This is not convenient at all. If i reboot my computer it usually goes back to desktop mode. If i check the settings it always says i'm in desktop mode though???

3: This is a new one. I have movies with embedded subtitles. They used to just work, lately they sometimes show up, other times they don't, if they do start then they randomly stop in the middle of the movie. If i play that same file with VLC the subtitles work as expected throughout the whole movie/show.

Anybody else experienced any of these and had a solution for them?

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

I'm not using an app on the tv, i have my mini pc attached to the tv and just use emby in my browser.

So the change happens in the browser after usually a few days.

OK that sounds like browsing data is getting cleared. That would cause that.

And how can i avoid that happening? I don't clear my cache on a regular basis. Is it something the browser does by itself?

In Emby the setting still says it's in desktop mode after the change happens, and no matter what option i select after it always stays the same, even tried rebooting Emby but that would still result in the same. Only rebooting the pc usually sorts it out again.

you might have configured the browser to do that and have forgotten that you did that. is that possible? under normal circumstances these settings should be retained for a long time.

Hi,

I've attached the emby server log.

The important bit would start from 2025-06-10 22:18:51.733. That's where i started playing a movie again. It didn't take as long as some others to get it to start again, but still took a while. I skipped around because i noticed that after 26min into the movie the subtitles stop working. I let it play from before 26min until 28 min, that's where they disappear, and the never come back afterwards.

If i play the same file in VLC the subtitles are there the whole time.

Hi,

I was wondering if you have any updates?
I did some more digging myself and have some findings.

I made a local library to exclude network issues, but still the same it takes a long time for certain files to resume.
I did find out that a file encoded in HEVC and in a .mkv container doesn't seem to have any of the issues. They resume almost instantly! Whereas .h264 encoded or .mp4 containers take a very long time to resume.

I did the following test and added logs for you to hopefully look at:

Rebooted Emby

Started a file encoded in HEVC in .mkv container, skipped ahead, stopped movie, resumed again. There is no problem, resuming is pretty much instant

Started a file encoded in H264 in .mkv container, skipped ahead, stopped movie, resumed again. This time it took about 2min to resume.

Extra info:

Emby is installed on windows 11, all latest updates for windows and Emby, I use Edge as a browser.

i have an AMD Ryzen 7 5700u mini pc with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD

Normally data is stored on Synology NAS, 2 Bay, 2GB memory (tests on nas storage give the same results as locally)

Network is Unifi based, Cloud gateway Ultra, U6LR AP, Lite 8 Poe switch

Let me know if you need any more info. I would really like to find a solution for this :)

I did some more testing and it seems that the problem is browser related for me. I've tried both in edge and chrome and from different computers on the local network. All the same result. I then installed the Emby client app from the windows store and everything works fine there. skipping goes smoothly, and resuming takes less than 10sec.

I would prefer not to have to install an extra app, but this is for sure a viable solution for now.

Since it is direct playing this sounds like an issue with the browser video player. For what it's worth, our installed apps come with a more robust video player embedded that can handle more types of files.

Hi, what TV do you have? We already have apps for Samsung and LG.
