Should I really not use Connect?

Not necessary when connecting locally on your LAN, which I imagine the Firestick is local to your Emby Server yes?

what's interesting is the library is installed on a Windows 7 SP1 box.  I first tried to install the Emby Server on that box.  I got an error downloading package...
System.NullReferenceException
Object reference not set to an instance of an object

@maravigthis is an incorrect error message but it really just means that the installer was unable to download files required by the installation. This could happen if you have something blocking access to github.com, or it could also be due to Windows 7's outdated SSL certificates.

In any event, what you can do is download the portable zip file, then just unzip and run embyserver.exe:

https://emby.media/windows-server.html

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

I tried to download the portable server, but got operation failed when I tried to extract the file(s), same thing happened on the x86 version which I tried for the heck of it.

do you have 7zip installed on that machine?

yes

I'd say the fact that you're getting an error even when trying to unpack the zip file would suggest a bigger issue with that machine.

But the Windows 7 machine is not the one running Emby Server right?

Correct.  It’s just the machine where all the media files are.  My laptop is where I’m running envy server and even if I disable the firewall it still can’t talk to the Firestick

@maravigwhat software gave you the "operation failed" error? Can you please show a screenshot?

As others have said, 7zip or WinRar should be able to handle it just fine. Thanks !
