RanmaCanada 494 Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 Did you clone the entire drive or just the partition with the data? And what cloning software did you use?

Boot disk is Disk 1. I guess I initialized the disk wrong and now need to do it all over again. I already removed the bad SSD from my system but have another 1TB SSD installed (same Intel indicated above) so I'll have to clone to that one, then format the Samsung SSD and clone back to it again. ARG.. I will eventually do this but it isn't a rush right now as I want to get my Emby Server up and running again.. Otherwise, how to bypass the compatibility check (and does that "stick" over time or will some future Windows 11 update force me to fix the disk to be GPT?
viking19 32 Posted May 12, 2025 Posted May 12, 2025 The command is built in to windows 10 by using cmd prompt like this How to Convert Windows 10 from Legacy BIOS to UEFI without Data Loss. Or any disk management software can do it as well, I don't remember which one I used years ago but I had no issues converting the OS drive. I currently use DiskGenius and it has the capability. I used Rufus to create an install usb that bypassed the requirements and installed to a non supported PC (I5 6500), but your system is compatible (I also have a 3700x) so you should try the options above.

Well, this was not successful for me so I formatted the new Samsung 990EV again to gpt and am again cloning my old drive. Hopefully it holds up to do this but I believe it is mostly reading from the drive and not writing to the drive so it should be okay. Wish I realized beforehand that Windows 11 wanted only gpt drives but it is what it is. It's not like I do this sort of thing every day.
Solution Sammy 790 Posted May 14, 2025 Author Solution Posted May 14, 2025 Well, after several iterations of trial and error I finally got my BIOS/UEFI set up straight and successfully moved Windows 10 from my failing MBR ssd to a new GPT ssd I have updated to Windows 11 well before normal support ends in October. Hardest thing was getting the GPT boot drive which had to be done not via cloning but rather via creating an image on the other new ssd I had but didn't use for the boot drive and also going through steps to initiate the drive as GPT with the proper partitioning to restore the image to. Thanks to Macrium customer support on walking me through this. Microsoft made it especially difficult this time to jump to the next OS version. Going from 7 to 10 was a breeze but this was not. Next up.. Installing new drives in my case and getting my programs up and running again. What started as a new build thread ended up being how to upgrade from Windows 10 on an MBR disk to Windows 11 on a GPT disk thread.. 1
