mholin 23 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 over the last years, I gave my children the hint to try bitrate 1080p/6MBIT first, if this does not play well, they should try 5MBIT or 4MBIT manually. I noticed that setting the bitrate manually always leads to reencoding of audio as well, either MP3 192kbps, or AC3 384kbps. Setting bitrate to 'auto' will conserve original audio codec in most situations. My question: will 'auto' try to determinate internet/network speed only at starting time of the movie, or will it do line speed tests ongoing during playback, like we know it from Netflix and others? so will 'auto' enable something like variable bitrate? bye Michael
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 Emby does not test during playback or make dynamic changes based on tests. In fact, "Auto" is (I believe) not based on a test, but is a default value which is hoped to be suitable in typical usage. If you have high-bit-rate media and a reliable fast connection, then setting a high value manually will give the best results. Paul
yocker 1248 Posted April 22, 2025 Posted April 22, 2025 I believe the Android version of the app (might only be the Emby for Android TV, not sure..) makes a small test to determine the speed of your network before playback. Other than that it is as @pwhodgessays just a set default value. It's something that has been discussed to great length on this forum and something that needs to change for sure as "auto" kinda indicates that something is happening and not just another value.
