Opensubtitles does not work

Hi Everyone,

I cannot get opensubtitles to work properly. I'm hearing impaired so this is something I would like to get working properly.

When starting to watch a show, I search for subtitles and it says that it could not find any.

I'll try and give as much info as I can.

- Sony TV with Android TV / Google TV
- Have removed and reinstalled the plugin.
- Checked my passwords etc (logged into opensubtitles.com and can browse)
- Restarted the server, unticked "needing a hash match" etc

I have attached my Emby server log, there should be some attempts for it to download subtitles.

Having bad hearing sucks. I really need subtitles

Thanks in advance

Hi there, how have you configured subtitle options on each of your libraries in Emby library setup?

Hi Mate - Yes I have.

I even turned off hash matching. But when using Emby from the app on my TV, when I search for subtitles, it always said none are found.

I'm not really sure how to understand the information in the log file

Is there anything obvious in those logs?

Sometimes they don't have subtitles for the item and it's common when they're recent. This is one of those cases for that episode you're trying. You can try other sites like Addic7ed.

I checked that too. I know it's probably a bit lazy, but I fed the logfile and all the information into ChatGPT and it says that looking at the log, the requests aren't even going out.

Here's what it said:

Even in this fresh log, no actual subtitle search request is being made to OpenSubtitles.

We can see the configuration POST happening:

OpenSubtitles: Searching for subtitles for "The Last of Us S02E01"

So Emby is saving your config, but not triggering a subtitle search afterward — that usually means it's failing silently due to bad credentials or plugin initialization failure.

I've checked the credentials and re-entered them multiple times. I've also logged into their website and browsed for subtitles and my credentials work fine there.

I'm a bit lost, being deaf kinda sucks, I rely heavily on subtitles. The only choice I have now is to run any media through Faster-Whisper (AI that generates subtitles - Works pretty quickly with a decent GPU. But it adds a step to all media now which is a bit slow and cumbersome.

Any ideas where I can start to look for next?

I've done a few other things like:

elete the .dll files and re-install the openSubtitles plugin.
tried other languages
Fired up my old Plex server, and it worked fine (I really don't want to have to switch to plex though)

I'm a bit lost, but I appreciate your help

You can go to each of the websites and download the subtitles. The downside is you have to manually name the files to match the media so that Emby can find and use them.

opensubtitles.com (same as plugin), opensubtitles.org and addic7ed.com.

There are plenty of open subtitle requests in that log. are you using a vpn by any chance?

Not using a VPN.

Are they getting out and does it look like they are working?

It looks like the requests are going out, yes. Have you compared to what opensubtitles actually has on their website?

Checking opensubtitles, it says that zero subtitles have been downloaded. (That's over a week, there should have been a few by now)

When I do the subtitle search from within Emby, it still says that no subtitles could be found. That has not worked for quite a while.

I really do not want to attempt reinstalling Emby from scratch, I have a lot of watch data that I do not want to lose.

It's a shame this is broken.

Yes, and it says that zero subtitles have been downloaded.

No, that's not what I asked. I mean to search for the same content on their website and compared to what opensubtitles actually has on their website?

Yes, and every time I search, it says nothing could be found. If I turn off "Use exact hash match" it still says that nothing can be found.

Go to the opensubtitles website and there are tonnes of subtitles there for that program. Download it manually, drop it into the media folder and Emby sees it.

Is my emby install broken?  It's about 6-7 years old

OK can you please show a specific example? Thanks.

For example, you mentioned last of us s02e01, and you also said you checked the opensubtitles.com website to verify that they had any subtitles for your episode.

Now maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I'm blind, but look:

Okay, the next time I sit down and try and watch something I will give an example.
