pcs800 0 Posted April 17, 2025 Posted April 17, 2025 Lets say someone has movies on their emby server and wants to give access to their sister, who lives elsewhere. I am more than familiar with setting up port forwarding, etc. But is there something Emby users typically like to use when it comes to keeping the activity hidden from the man?

Luke 42078 Posted April 18, 2025 Posted April 18, 2025 Hi, setting up https for your server is probably a good start.
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 18, 2025 Posted April 18, 2025 (edited) I guess what you want is not to hide your IP (it's how external access gets to your machine, after all!), but to obscure the fact that you are streaming video from Emby - right? (1) Set up HTTPS, either in Emby, or preferably using a reverse proxy - Caddy will automate both getting and renewing certificates for you. HTTPS makes it impossible to read the contents of the stream you are sending out, though the fact that it is video might be rather easy to deduce, I guess. (1a) To use HTTPS you need a domain name. Don't use "Emby" as part of it. (2) Use port forwarding or the reverse proxy to change the ports seen from outside your network. I'd recommend using 80 and 443 (i.e. the standard HTTP and HTTPS ports) so that there is no immediate clue that you are running Emby. Another approach is to use a product like Tailscale or Zerotier - and I believe NordVPN offer a similar option - which requires a client on the remote machine, but then makes it appear as if that machine is on your network, thus isolating it from external peeking. "Tunnel" is a good keyword to think about as well. Either way, make sure that your remote users have decent passwords. Paul Edited April 18, 2025 by pwhodges
