Posters and other art reverting back to old art

Recommended Posts

I just spent hours going through a good chunk of my media to update all the art and then all of a sudden I see the little update wheel on my movies section and I look and all of my new posters have reverted back to what they were before, I have my metadata set to never update and I have the nfo boxes checked in the metadata section. What am I not getting right? How can they even revert back if I replace the primary image with a new one? Is there a box I'm not checking? Very frustrating

Sounds like you have local artwork and don't have permissions to replace it.  So Emby downloads new to /metadata folder but eventually reverts back to local as they will take priority.  But need folder content and server log for specific example.

Ok I will get the logs as soon as I'm at my computer, specific example is I have the movie The Godfather in my library, has been there for years, it has all the correct metadata and plays fine, I click on edit images, search for a new poster image and select it, emby now displays the new image and persists for hours and multiple restarts. Later at some point emby decides to revert back to the original poster.

When a new show or movie is added it is able to add art and it doesn't just disappear so I'm confused why new art is disappearing

Here are the logs, I changed the the settings for the metadata so that the posters would be saved with the media and it was working for a bit, now when i try to change the poster it does nothing, i can select the poster but it just goes back to the page with no changes

The likely answer:

The old poster is sitting in your media folder next to the video file. You need to delete that.

Or you can enable the library option to save images in media folders and then the server will handle that step for you.

well I did set it to save in my media folder and the issue is that it does save there I have tested by changing it multiple times with the folder open and it does change in my file system, it however does not change in emby

Most likely it will not. I'm guessing the next library scan will revert it, right?

Ok so my plan is to delete all of the .jpg files from my media folders, disable image downloads in both sonarr and radar then run a full metadata with replace all images. If I understand correctly if there is nothing in the media folders emby will have nothing to revert back to. Then moving forward I will depend on emby to populate images and not sonarr and radar. Does that seem like it will work?

Or should I delete all the .jpg files from the server metadata folder and save all files to the media folders?

No reason that shouldn't work, although I would test on individual movies at a time and then go in bulk once you find the right combination.

Would you recommend saving art in the server folder or in the media folders?

Can you enable debug logging and save a image for a specific example and provide the server log so we can see the saving process.

Really a personal choice as with media mean the images can never be lost but will require write permissions.  In Server metadata folder you will lose them with every media move/rename folder goes offline ect as the content gets purged from the db and readded.

Is there a way to find individual movies in the metadata folder since they are all just named with a string of letters and numbers

Not really, one would have to look up the movie in Emby api to see what folder its image reside in.

Question now is if i do the same for tv will emby take care of downloading all of the thumbnails for each episode, i figure it will be an all day update but i dont want to do it if emby wont download the episode thumbs

It will use your library setup options.  But you can always test on one show.
