Shaneholmes79 1 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Hi all, I have an old Sky tv box in uk which has analogue coax out and also HDMI. Is there any device that will let me watch this using emby, prob similar to hdhomerun? I can control remotely but unable to watch away from home. Thanks in advance
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 How about this? https://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_hvr935c.html Paul
Shaneholmes79 1 Posted April 14, 2025 Author Posted April 14, 2025 Thanks, that seems to have the analogue. I didn;t think these could be used with live tv though, only hdhomerun?
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Yes, they can. You have to have the Hauppauge control software, WinTV, installed, which Emby talks to rather than the hardware (when it finally arrives, the long-awaited TV update in Emby will remove this require, I understand). I had another look at the Hauppage product list, and found this which is just the analogue alone: https://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_usblive2.html Paul
Shaneholmes79 1 Posted April 14, 2025 Author Posted April 14, 2025 Got it. Can't find the wintv in plugins? Does this have to run on a pc?
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Note, the analogue-only devices are supplied with capture software only; WinTV is bought separately, for a pretty nominal price. Paul
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Just now, Shaneholmes79 said: Got it. Can't find the wintv in plugins? Does this have to run on a pc? When WinTV (from Hauppauge) is installed, it shows as a selectable option in Emby TV setup. Paul
Shaneholmes79 1 Posted April 14, 2025 Author Posted April 14, 2025 Ok, is wintv installed on pc or Nas or emby etc?
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 Ah, I had assumed Windows without thinking - my bad... WinTV will need to be on the same machine as Emby (I think), so won't work if your Emby is not on Windows. Hauppauge do supply drivers for Linux, but leave you to find a program to use it. When TVnext is finally added to Emby (during the beta cycle following the release of Emby 4.9), then I believe it will be usable for you through Emby. Meanwhile, maybe you can use that device with WinTV on your desktop until Emby comes up with the goods. You can view the frustration over the time it has taken for TVnext to come to Emby in this thread: Paul
emveepee 132 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 FWIW I don't see anything in TVNext about DirectShow (Windows) or v4l2 (Linux) needed for Analog TV support. This kind of makes sense since these device stopped being made a decade ago. Definitely the HDMI grabbers with http interfaces are they better way forward. @Carlolikes the Uray but I have one and find the Link ENC1 better, longer uptime before needing a reboot and it often cheaper. As a bonus it has a USB port so you can plug in a cheap USB HDMI dongle which it transcodes and streams nicely for you to. Martin
Carlo 4560 Posted April 15, 2025 Posted April 15, 2025 The LinkPi's have a few quirks that sometimes pop up in setup and require a device reset to fix, but once you have it configured it basically just works. By default, they reboot themselves nightly, which the Uray's don't do by default, which might account for the "uptime" difference you see. Each new firmware upgrade on the LinkPi's is eliminating some of the quirks I mentioned, which is making the devices much easier to use and experiment on. A lot of people in the ChannelsDVR forum are using them as well as posting some of the bigger gotcha quirks and how to fix/avoid them. It seems the people having both Uray and LinkPi devices are favoring the LinkPis, especially the ENC5V2 5 HDMI model, which can be had for $270-$300. I don't know if you're aware, but the ENC1 can simultaneously encode data from the HDMI porta well as the USB port. Add a $20 HDMI to USB capture device plugged into the ENC1's USB port and you essentially have a two port HDMI encoder.
emveepee 132 Posted April 16, 2025 Posted April 16, 2025 I don't have my LinkPI ENC1 auto reboot and I ssh uptime seems good to me right now. 19:39:08 up 79 days, 20:58, 2 users, load average: 4.08, 3.88, 3.92 My URay would need a reset every few weeks or the picture would go wonky. Since we don't have cable card in Canada or lot of channels on DVB like in Europe we are kind of stuck with capture or pirating to have our own DVR. I chose HDMI capture. I actually use the HDMI out on the LinkPi to my main TV. so that I can use an STB directly or go through NextPVR (I have a separate RPi controlling my STB with LIRC) . I have got the LinkPi REC1 on order since it offers full pass-through HDMI (apparently) so I won't be stuck with 4K 30. Why wouldn't I just use NextPVR or Emby you might ask? Mainly because My STB provides catchup Unfortunately Gracenote doesn't identify catchup shows in their metadata so it is difficult to automate with LIRC. My prime recording device on another STB is still the HDPVR with AC3 recording. Linux.has proven to be more stable than Windows for that. Two tuners plus OTA is plenty for me. In a pinch I do have cloud DVR. I already have UVC dongle on it connected to an Android stick's HDIM and it works well as I noted earlier. It's nice not having to depend on mjpeg video. Controlling Android is not as easy as LIRC to the STB though. Martin 1
